Top five biggest upsets at Miami Open 2025 ft. Novak Djokovic

Jakub Mensik stunned everyone in the final of the Miami Open 2025 by knocking out Novak Djokovic.
The Miami Open 2025 witnessed plenty of upsets beginning with the opening stages, yet managed to keep fans hooked until the very end. American players failed to impress despite showing promise in their backyard. Coco Gauff and Ben Shelton were ejected before the last eight.
American No. 1 Taylor Fritz failed to advance beyond the semifinal round in his quest to give the home crowd a local champion. Carlos Alcaraz and Iga Swiatek were among the surprise exodus of top seeds, losing to players they would have breezed past on any other occasion.
Only half of the top ten seeds made it to the last eight in the women’s singles draw. Fewer of the top ten seeded survived to make the last eight in the men’s singles draw – just two cut. Here’s a list of upsets from the Miami Open 2025.
Magda Linette vs Coco Gauff
Magda Linette headed into her fourth-round clash with Coco Gauff on the backfoot. The Pole had lost both her previous matches against Gauff. However, in Miami, the American’s poor record on home turf returned to haunt her as she tumbled out in the fourth round for a second consecutive year.
The 33-year-old Linette advanced to the quarter-finals in Miami for the first time with a 6-4, 6-4 takedown of the World No. 3 in just 89 minutes. The veteran Pole’s quarter-final run was also her first trip to the last eight of a WTA 1000 event.
Alexandra Eala vs Iga Swiatek
Alexandra Eala, a wildcard from the Philippines, pulled off the biggest upset of the women’s draw when she handed Iga Swiatek a straight-set defeat. Eala, the WTA No. 140, overcame Swiatek, the 2022 champion, with a 6-2, 7-5 scoreline in her first tour-level meeting against the five-time Grand Slam winner.
It took only 1 hour and forty minutes to end Swiatek’s stay in Miami and move into the semi-finals. Facing World No. 4, Jessica Pegula, the 19-year-old left-hander, ran out of steam but managed to take the match to the distance. After her Cinderella run in Miami, Eala has stormed to her Top 100 debut for a career-high ranking of No. 75.
Coleman Wong vs Ben Shelton
Hong Kong’s Coleman Wong ranked 182nd in the world, was impressed with his second main draw appearance in Miami. Wong defeated World No. 14 Ben Shelton as a wildcard entry, in three sets, 7–6 (3), 2–6, 7–6 (5).
Wong’s victory over Shelton at the Miami Masters makes him the first player from Hong Kong to defeat a top-20 player since ATP Rankings were published in 1973. After victory over the big-serving American in the Miami Open second round, Wong makes his way up to No. 167 in the ATP Rankings.
David Goffin vs Carlos Alcaraz
David Goffin caused one of the biggest upsets of the second round by defeating the 2022 champion, Carlos Alcaraz. On the same day, unseeded Spaniard Jaume Munar accounted for another former champion, 2023 winner Daniil Medvedev.
The 34-year-old Belgian was composed as he crafted a 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 victory over the No. 2 seed, improving to 2-1 in his head-to-head against Alcaraz. This was the 21-year-old Alcaraz’s earliest exit from Miami since losing to Emil Ruusuvuori in the first round back in 2021. Alcaraz has now lost his second straight match at an ATP 1000 event after his loss to Jack Draper in the semi-final at Indian Wells in the first week of March.
Jakub Mensik vs Novak Djokovic
The final was Novak Djokovic’s to lose, as he had made the championship round without dropping a set. Djokovic was aiming for a list of milestones – a record 41st Masters trophy, first to win seven Miami Open titles. Jimmy Connors and Roger Federer are only the third men in ATP history to win at least 100 tour-level titles – Djokovic is currently on 99.
However, Jakub Mensik had other ideas. Mensik was playing not just his first Miami Open final but also his maiden ATP 1000 final appearance. The 19-year-old defeated two other top-ten players – Jack Draper (7) and Taylor Fritz (4) before setting up the title-round showdown with Djokovic.
Mensik, 19, prevailed 7-6(4), 7-6(4) over the 37-year-old Serb to become the youngest since Carlos Alcaraz to lift the Miami Open trophy. Alcaraz was 18 when he won the title in 2022. Another feather in Mensik’s cap was becoming only the fourth player on the tour to win their first title at an ATP Masters 1000.
