Top 10 players who have withdrawn from Miami Open 2025

Due to his ban, Jannik Sinner will not be able to defend his crown.
Most players who skipped the Indian Wells Open were racing against time to regain fitness for Miami Open 2025. While some managed to recover in time, many were forced to withdraw. Additionally, the demanding tour schedule took its toll, with players who competed in multiple tournaments picking up minor injuries, ultimately leading them to miss the second half of the Sunshine Double.
Here’s a look at the top 10 players who are absent from the 40th edition of the Miami Open.
10. Shang Juncheng
Shang Juncheng, a 2024 Next Gen ATP Finals participant, underwent surgery on his right foot and has been inactive on tour for a while. The Chinese had played the Hong Kong Tennis Open, where his semi-final round against Kei Nishikori ended prematurely when he retired because of illness.
9. Marketa Vondrousova

Former Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova chose to skip the 2025 Indian Wells Open earlier, despite having competed in the Dubai Open, where she lost to eventual champion Mirra Andreeva. Although she appeared fully fit during that match, Vondrousova has yet to disclose the reason for her absence from the BNP Paribas Open. The Czech will now miss the Miami event too.
8. Kei Nishikori
Former finalist at Miami Open, Kei Nishikori has pulled out from the tournament citing a back injury ahead of his opening match against compatriot Yushihito Nishioka.
The 35-year-old took to social media to inform his fans that “My body has not recovered enough from the matches last week”. After an opening round exit at the Indian Wells, Nishikori made the semifinals at the Phoenix ATP Challenger, where he fell to eventual champion Joao Fonseca.
7. Thanasi Kokkinakis
Thanasi Kokkinakis recently underwent surgery to treat a long-standing pectoral injury. The 28-year-old aggravated the issue during his grueling five-set loss to Jack Draper in the Australian Open second round, forcing him to withdraw from a doubles match with Nick Kyrgios the following day. Now in recovery, the Australian isn’t 100% sure if the surgery is a success and will therefore be sidelined for Miami.

6. Tallon Griekspoor

Tallon Griekspoor withdrew from his opening-round match against Tomas Etcheverry just hours before their scheduled clash. The Dutchman has been in impressive form this season, reaching the semifinals of the Dubai Open and the quarterfinals at Indian Wells.
Notably, he denied Daniil Medvedev a second consecutive Dubai final, edging him out in a thrilling quarter-final where he saved four match points. Given his strong performances, Griekspoor would have been a serious contender in Miami, making his absence a significant relief for the rest of the field.
5. Zhang Zhizhen
Zhang Zhizhen produced a remarkable result in Open 13, defeating Hubert Hurkacz in three sets. Barring that result, he has not won the opening round of any tournament this season, highlighting his woeful form and inconsistency. Zhizhen’s last appearance at the Indian Wells Open finished in the round of 128. The Chinese later withdrew from Miami, due to a niggle.
4. Nicolas Jarry
Nicolas Jarry sustained a toe injury at the Chile Open in Santiago and hasn’t recovered yet. As a result, the Chilean tennis player will miss the Sunshine Double. The eventual winner, Jannik Sinner, was made to toil hard by Jarry in the first round of the Australian Open 2025, with the first two sets being decided in tiebreaks.
3. Barbora Krejcikova

Reigning 2024 Wimbledon champion Barbora Krejcikova remains sidelined due to a persistent back injury. She has not been able to make any impact this season yet, she missed the Australian Open. The Czech’s recovery has seen little progress, forcing her withdrawal from the Sunshine Double. This further puts her title defence in Wimbledon, in jeopardy.

2. Venus Williams
Venus Williams last played competitive tennis at this event, back in 2024, when she suffered a round-one defeat to Diana Shnaider. Earlier, the Indian Wells Open 2025 organisers had offered Venus Williams a wild-card entry, but the American reportedly turned the offer down.
1. Hubert Hurkacz

Former Miami Open champion, Hubert Hurkacz, also made a last-minute withdrawal from the event due to a back injury. Ranked 22 in ATP singles, Hurkacz was scheduled to face Luciano Darderi in the second round. Darderi with now face lucky loser Adam Walton of Australia.
Hurkcaz is yet to reach a final this season, with his best performance coming at the ATP Rotterdam Open where he took a set off Carlos Alcaraz in a semi-final defeat.
