Novak Djokovic is the only active player on the list.

The Miami Open, also known as the Miami Masters, is a professional tennis tournament hosted at Miami Gardens, Florida. The ATP 1000 event takes place every year in late March or early April on outdoor hard courts. It serves as the second leg of the “Sunshine Double,” which consists of two elite hard court events held in the United States shortly after the Indian Wells Open in early spring.

The tournament is a part of the ATP Tour Masters 1000 and WTA Tour 1000 and has historically attracted some top players. Andre Agassi, Pete Sampras, Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, Steffi Graf and Serena Williams are some of the greatest tennis players who have lit up the courts.

The men’s singles at the Miami Open always draw the best male professionals from all around the world, with some of them even taking multiple titles.

Here is a list of players with most men’s singles titles.

Ivan Lendl/Andy Roddick/Andy Murray (2)

The Czech-American former professional tennis player Ivan Lendl secured the Miami Open title twice in his illustrious career, sharing this achievement with Andy Murray and Andy Roddick. Lendl’s first victory came in 1986 when he defeated Mats Wilander. Three years later, in 1989, he clinched his second title overcoming Thomas Muster with a walkover.

Roddick, the American tennis star and 2003 US Open champion, won his first title in 2004 defeating Argentine Guillermo Coria and his second in 2010. Meanwhile, Murray defeated Novak Djokovic in the final of 2009 to clinch his first title in Miami, while his second title came in 2013 with his triumph over David Ferrer.

Pete Sampras (3)

Pete Sampras is a three-time Miami Open champion. He won his first title in 1993. The following year, amidst their burgeoning rivalry, Sampras took a 5-4 lead against Andre Agassi. In the 1994 final, despite being ill, Sampras rallied to win his second consecutive title with sets of 5-7, 6-3, 6-3. However, Agassi exacted his revenge at the subsequent edition in 1995.

The 2000 Miami Open championship match between Sampras and Gustavo Kuerten is etched in tennis history as a pivotal moment that signaled the transition from the 20th to the 21st century.

The match featured Kuerten, a rising talent from Brazil who personified the modern baseline game, versus Sampras, the pinnacle of the serve-and-volley era. A collision of personalities, styles and even gear occurred during the match. An era came to an end with Sampras’ triumph, where he grabbed his third title.

Roger Federer (4)

In 2005 and 2006 Roger Federer won the Miami Open consecutively. In 2005, he triumphed over the then-young Rafael Nadal in a five-set thriller to clinch his first title in Miami. The following year, while securing his second title he defeated his former coach Ivan Ljubicic.

Federer claimed his third title in 2017, once again besting his Spanish rival and friend, Nadal. Although the Swiss maestro was defeated by Nadal in the Round of 32 at the 2004 Miami Open, it marked the beginning of their storied rivalry. His fourth and final title came in 2019 when he overcame John Isner.

Novak Djokovic (6)

Novak Djokovic has clinched the Miami Open six times, tying with the legendary Andre Agassi for the most wins. Djokovic boasts a 44-7 record at the tournament, with his most recent victory in 2016. The Serbian claimed his first title in 2007 by defeating Guillermo Cañas. He then secured consecutive titles in 2011 and 2012, overcoming his arch-rivals Nadal and Murray respectively.

Subsequently, Djokovic triumphed over Nadal, Murray and Kei Nishikori to win three successive titles from 2014 to 2016.

Andre Agassi (6)

Andre Agassi has participated in some remarkable rallies, winning the Miami Open six times, a record he shares with Novak Djokovic for the most wins in ATP history. His victories came in 1990, 1995, 1996, 2001, 2002 and 2003. He also shares the record for the most consecutive titles with Djokovic, having won three years in a row from 2001 to 2003.

Furthermore, Agassi holds the record for the most consecutive match wins in the tournament, with 20 victories spanning from 2001 to 2003, until his defeat to Agustín Calleri in the fourth round in 2004. Additionally, Agassi achieved the Sunshine Double in 2001, an accomplishment shared by only seven men’s singles players to date.

Agassi defeated Stefan Edberg to claim his first Miami Open title in 1990. The American secured two consecutive trophies in Miami in 1995 and 1996, triumphing over Pete Sampras and Goran Ivanišević respectively. He then overcame Jan-Michael Gambill, Roger Federer and Carlos Moyá to win three back-to-back titles from 2001 to 2003. In 1996, the defending champion Agassi was declared the winner after Ivanišević was compelled to withdraw from the match with Agassi leading the opening set 3–0.
