The Williams sisters have collectively claimed 11 titles over the years.

What do you think of when we talk about the biggest tennis tournaments of the year? No doubt, the first ones that come to mind are the Grand Slams. Nonetheless, there are some other tournaments during this time of year that have nearly the same level as the Grand Slams. One such tournament is the Miami Open, an annual tennis tournament held at Miami Gardens, Florida in the USA.

It was created by Butch Buchholz in 1985 and is also known as “Winter Wimbledon,” being the second event following the Indian Wells Open under the “Sunshine Double.” These two are staged on hard courts in America during springtime.

The competition which is part of ATP Tour Masters 1000 and WTA Tour 1000 has seen many great players in history holding the title. Andre Agassi, Pete Sampras, Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, Steffi Graf and Serena Williams are among those who have triumphed on the court with their skills.

Over the years, the women’s singles at the Miami Open have attracted top tennis players from across the globe with some going on to win multiple Miami Open titles.

Monica Seles, Arantxa Sánchez Vicario, Martina Hingis, Kim Clijsters, Ashleigh Barty (2)

Yugoslavia’s Monica Seles was the second women’s singles player to hold the Miami Open title for the second time after Steffi Graf. She first won the title in 1990 by defeating Austria’s Judith Wiesner with a scoreline of 6-1, 6-2.

She then secured her second title at the tournament the following year, in 1991, by defeating Gabriela Sabatini of Argentina 6-3, 7-5.

Apart from Monica Seles, Arantxa Sánchez Vicario, Martina Hingis, Kim Clijsters and Ashleigh Barty have also held the title twice in their careers.

Victoria Azarenka (3)

Victoria Azarenka has clinched the Miami Open title three times in her career. Her first victory in the final was in 2009 against Serena Williams, whom she defeated in straight sets 6-3, 6-1. She followed it up with her second title in 2011, triumphing over Maria Sharapova with sets of 6-1 and 6-4.

In 2016, Azarenka dominated the final against Russia’s Svetlana Kuznetsova, winning convincingly with sets of 6-3, 6-2.

Venus Williams (3)

The Williams sisters have collectively claimed 11 titles over the years. Venus Williams was the first between the two sisters to win the Miami Open. In 1998, she defeated Russia’s Anna Kournikova in a hard-fought match with sets of 2-6, 6-4 and 6-1.

Venus successfully defended her title in 1999 by overcoming her sister Serena Williams in a thrilling encounter, with sets of 6-1, 4-6 and 6-1. Her third title came in 2001 when she outclassed USA’s Jennifer Capriati in a closely-contested match with sets of 4-6, 6-1 and 7-6.

Steffi Graf (5)

German tennis legend Steffi Graf clinched five Miami Open titles in her illustrious career. She held the record for the most women’s singles titles in the tournament until Serena Williams matched it in 2008 and surpassed it in 2013.

Graf’s first title came in 1987 when she defeated defending champion Chris Evert of the USA, in dominant fashion with sets of 6-1, 6-2. After successfully defending her title in 1988, she went on to secure three consecutive titles in 1994, 1995 and 1996.

Serena Williams (8)

When it comes to women’s singles titles, the name that shines brightest is Serena Williams. She has triumphed at eight Miami Open finals since 2002. Her journey began with a victory over fellow USA player Jennifer Capriati in 2002, with sets of 7-5, 7-6. Serena continued her dominance, winning back-to-back titles in 2003 and 2004, followed by victories in 2007 and 2008.

In 2013, she secured her sixth title, becoming the first player after Andre Agassi to achieve this feat in the singles category.
