Djokovic overcame Wu Jibing in four sets to keep his title hopes alive.

Novak Djokovic began his Wimbledon 2026 campaign with a victory, but he was made to toil hard by China’s Wu Jibing, who showed why he is such a tough opponent to play against, when fully fit and firing.

While the attention was firmly on a potential upset, a wholesome moment stole the spotlight during the opening set.

When both players were sitting in their chairs during a brief stoppage in play, a man in the stands took the opportunity to propose to his girlfriend.

The couple’s joy spread rapidly through the crowd, drawing a wave of applause and delight from those seated around them.

Djokovic, returning to the court as play was set to resume, appeared to notice the commotion and walked toward the couple.

He paused, looked at them with a wide smile, gestured meaningfully toward his ring finger, then made a heart shape with his hands and gave the newly-engaged pair a double thumbs up.

Turning back once more to face the stands, he walked toward the couple and called out directly: “I want an invite to the wedding.” The pair, still beaming from the proposal itself, were visibly delighted at the exchange, grinning from ear to ear.

It was noted afterwards that should Djokovic receive an invitation, he would have a rather good wedding singer available, Puerto Rican artist Bad Bunny, who was seated in the players’ box watching the match, having appeared on stage with Djokovic at a concert in London just two days earlier.

The match ended late on Centre Court and finished just in time before the mid-night curfew. The Serbian registered his 103rd win at Wimbledon and became the first ever player in Open Era history to win more than 80 Grand Slam first-round matches.
