Novak Djokovic gives some names who can take the ‘third guy’ role between Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz’s rivalry.

History repeats itself in this world, and tennis is no exception. The rivalry between Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz today is reminiscent of the old days, just like the one between Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer. But back then, a third man arrived to disrupt the duopoly: Novak Djokovic.

Who is that guy today?

For now, the answer seems uncertain. With Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray retired and Djokovic limiting his schedule to only Grand Slams in pursuit of his 25th major title, the men’s game now often feels like a two-horse race between the five-time Grand Slam winner Alcaraz and the World No. 1 Sinner.

However, Novak Djokovic himself believes that the story would not be complete without the third disruptor. Speaking at his US Open press conference, he praised the “Sincaraz” battles but noted the need for another player to challenge them. The 24-time Grand Slam champion gave some names, too.

“On a global sports stage, these are the types of encounters and rivalries people get very excited about. Their rivalry is, without a doubt, the best one we have at the moment,” he said.

“But hopefully somebody can get in the mix. (Holger) Rune was there, and he kept going up and down. Joao Fonseca is coming up.”

Novak Djokovic knows that role well. Once the outsider to Federer and Nadal, he grew into their equal, ultimately completing the Big Three era that defined men’s tennis for nearly two decades.

“I empathize with the third guy, because I was in those shoes with Federer and Nadal. I want to see a third guy coming in,” the four-time US Open winner said with a smile.

Denmark’s 22-year-old Holger Rune hasn’t won a Grand Slam yet, but he’s still young and has already won five ATP titles. His tactical net game, aggressive all-court style, and reliable backhand could mark a turning point in his career at any time.

Then there is 19-year-old Brazilian player Joao Fonseca, whom the Serbian legend described as the third guy of the Sinner and Alcaraz rivalry.

The teen sensation is already being compared to the Swiss great Roger Federer for his easy playing style, mixed with raw power. He is also carrying shades of the modern-day games of Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner.

Who are the two leading players dominating men’s tennis today?

Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz are currently the two standout players in men’s tennis.

Who are the players Novak Djokovic named as potential challengers?

Djokovic mentioned Holger Rune, a 22-year-old from Denmark with five ATP titles, and Joao Fonseca, a 19-year-old Brazilian rising star.

What does Novak Djokovic think about the rivalry between Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz?

Djokovic called it “without a doubt, the best rivalry we have at the moment,” saying fans love such head-to-head battles in individual sports like tennis, boxing, or Formula 1.
