Novak Djokovic's projected path to Swiss Indoors Basel 2026 final
Djokovic is still looking to secure qualification for the 2026 ATP Finals
Novak Djokovic arrives in Basel for his first appearance at the event since 2011, hoping to boost his bid for a place at the ATP Finals. He is 11th in the live Race to Turin currently, behind Rafael Jodar and Alex de Minaur, and is aiming for a record 19th qualification to the season-ending event.
He won the Basel title on his debut in 2009, and will be looking to improve his record at the venue. Seeded fourth, Djokovic has a challenging draw. Here’s a look at the Serbian’s potential path to the final.

Catch Every Update, Anytime, Anywhere
Round 1 – Ugo Humbert
The opener is a tricky one for the 39-year-old. Ugo Humbert is a French left-hander, who won four of his seven ATP titles in indoor events, and also famously beat Carlos Alcaraz on his way to the 2024 Paris Masters final.
Djokovic leads their head-to-head 1-0, but their only meeting was a straight-set win in the round of 16 way back at the 2019 Wimbledon Championships. The conditions suit Humbert more than they suit Djokovic, who will need to find his rhythm early, in order to prevent another first-round upset.
Round 2 – Jan-Lennard Struff
Jan-Lennard Struff, the big-serving German, has historically struggled to find success against Djokovic. The Serbian is 8-0 against him and has never dropped more than just a solitary set. If Yannick Hanfmann, whom Djokovic leads 3-0, upsets Struff in round one instead, the task would be just as comfortable on paper.
Quarter-final – Casper Ruud or Nuno Borges
Casper Ruud moved into a seeded position after Alexander Bublik withdrew, and he opens against Swiss wildcard Dominic Stricker. Djokovic leads the Norwegian 5-1, including the 2023 French Open final and the 2022 ATP Finals final, but Ruud’s only win came in the 2023 Monte Carlo semi-final.
Portugal’s Nuno Borges is the other potential alternative. The Serbian leads 2-0 against him, and he should prevail either way.
Semi-final – Ben Shelton or Jiri Lehecka

The most highly awaited contest is set to take place in the semi-finals, as Djokovic could be up against top seed Ben Shelton, who reached his first major final at the US Open last month but is coming off a third-round exit in Shanghai.
Djokovic leads the head-to-head 1-0, after a memorable straight-set win in the 2023 US Open semi-final, but this version of Shelton is a much more complete player.
Jiri Lehecka is the other candidate, having drawn Stan Wawrinka in his first match, which is also the Swiss veteran’s farewell. The eighth seeded Czech player has a big serve, but has lost both his prior meetings against the 24-time Grand Slam champion.
Final – Taylor Fritz, Arthur Fils or Rafael Jodar

The bottom half is stacked with Turin hopefuls, adding to the intrigue. Djokovic leads 11-0 against Fritz, the last win being a four-set US Open quarter-final in 2025, however the American did manage to end the streak in last year’s Six Kings Slam, though the result does not count under the official H2H.
Fritz opens with a rematch against Stefanos Tsitsipas, who beat him in Shanghai. Arthur Fils, the second seed and seventh in the Race, has never played Djokovic.
Rafael Jodar, who is ninth in the Race and makes his Basel debut against Alejandro Tabilo, is a direct competitor for Djokovic.
With potential matches against players with the same goal in mind, the stage is set for a high-stakes final contest, should these players get there by sailing through their opening round battles.
