Novak Djokovic reveals his morning routine, shares mantra for fitness

At the age of 38, Novak Djokovic continues to dominate tennis, reaching the semi-finals of both Grand Slam majors in 2025.

Beyond Novak Djokovic‘s stellar performances on the court, his fitness and longevity are reasons for his increased admiration and respect from fans around the world. Tennis is arguably the most demanding and physically exhausting sport, and players from different sporting backgrounds have praised the Serbian’s remarkable work ethic and commitment.

Djokovic is at the fag end of his career, and yet continues to prove to be a challenge for the best players of the current generation. His victory over Carlos Alcaraz in the quarter-finals of the Australian Open 2025 and a stellar campaign at the French Open are a testament to his dedication and hard work behind the scenes.

In a recent interview with digital creator and podcaster Ben Johnson, the 24-time Grand Slam champion gave fans an insight into his lifestyle and diet plan. Speaking on how he generally begins his day, Djokovic said, “The very moment I wake up is always a prayer. It’s always an expression of gratitude, first of all, to be alive, to have another chance to live that day.”

After an early dose of meditation, the 38-year-old talks about the importance of hydration. “I would take lukewarm water, lemon and salt, and I would take my hydration formula to replenish all the electrolytes and minerals and get myself going”, he said.

On the topic of beverages, the Serbian advocated against coffee and instead promoted the intake of fruit-based smoothies. “I don’t take coffee. I drink green tea occasionally. Then I would have to go practice tennis. In case I don’t have to practice tennis or have an obligation to train, I still wanna be active and still wanna be outdoors, ideally for my wellness“.

“I love dates, I can have dates all day. Even blue spirulina, which does not taste great – it’s disgusting but disguised in the smoothie”, he added.

Novak Djokovic’s outline on how to spend a day is a perfect blueprint to follow for every aspiring tennis player, or any sports person in general. Previously, cricketing legend Virat Kohli too had shown interest in connecting with the Serbian star. “I have a lot of respect for him and his journey; his passion for fitness is something I follow and believe in myself”, said Kohli.

Djokovic’s next assignment will be Wimbledon 2025, where he has won seven titles in the past and has finished as a finalist on the previous two occasions, losing to Carlos Alcaraz both times.

Djokovic would believe this is his best opportunity to end the 25th Grand Slam title wait, but it would be challenging given the strong competition he would have to contend with, led by World No. 1 and 2, Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz, alongside local hope and fourth-ranked Jack Draper.
