Djokovic survived a first-round scare at Wimbledon to remain undefeated in opening-round matches.

Novak Djokovic overcame Frenchman Alexandre Muller 6-1, 6-7(7), 6-2, 6-2 in the opening round on Tuesday, avoiding becoming a seeded casualty on the opening day. The 38-year-old Serbian squandered six set points in the second set after dominating Muller in the first.

Djokovic, the World No. 6, has improved to 20-0 in opening round matches at SW19 after winning the first round. The Serb also moves to 2-0 over the World No. 41 in their head-to-head. The seven-time Wimbledon champion will next face British wild card Dan Evans.

Evans defeated countryman Jay Clarke, 6-1, 7-5, 6-2—for a first win at Wimbledon 2021—to set up the second-round meeting with Djokovic. It will be their second tour-level meeting since Evans took the lead 1-0 by defeating the Serbian at Monte-Carlo in 2021.

Djokovic, seeded sixth at Wimbledon 2025, is at his lowest seeding at the grass court major since 2018. He is one title shy of Roger Federer’s record of eight Wimbledon titles. After defeating Alexandre Muller, he moves to 98 match wins at the venue. Since 2018, the Serb is 40-2 at SW19, with his two losses coming to Carlos Alcaraz in the last two finals.

Dan Evans struggled for meaningful results in the 2025 season and arrived in London ranked outside the top 150. Evans defeated Frances Tiafoe at Queen’s Club and Tommy Paul in Eastbourne and looks to make the most of the wild card awarded by tournament organisers.

Match prediction

Djokovic is seeded sixth at Wimbledon 2025, his lowest at the grass court major since 2018. He is one title shy of Roger Federer’s record of eight Wimbledon titles. After defeating Alexandre Muller, he moves to 98 wins at the venue. Since 2018, the Serb is 40-2 at SW19, with his two losses coming to Carlos Alcaraz in the last two finals.

While Evans posted a comfortable straight-set win to get past Jay Clarke, he faces a high-quality opponent in Djokovic. Though their only prior meeting in 2021 ended in Evans’ favour, it came on clay.

Djokovic will advance, but against Evans, he will have to earn the win.

Result: Novak Djokovic to win in four sets.
