Novak Djokovic vs Valentin Vacherot Shanghai Masters 2025

Djokovic is the oldest man to reach semi-finals of an ATP Masters 1000 event.

After a record-breaking showdown in the quarter-final, 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic is set to face 26-year-old Valentin Vacherot of Monaco on Saturday at the Shanghai Masters 2025 semi-finals.

For just the second time at the Shanghai Masters 2025, Djokovic pulled a match win in straight sets. The Serb defeated Zizou Bergs, 6-3, 7-5 in the last-eight round and now finds himself just two wins away from his record-extending fifth Shanghai Masters title.

Djokovic eased past Bergs in their maiden head-to-head to confirm his 80th Masters semi-final appearance in one hour and 50 minutes. The Serb at 38 years and 140 days is now the oldest semi-finalist at an ATP 1000 event.

The 24-time Grand Slam champion is closing in on his second title of the season following his title run at the Geneva Open in May.

Djokovic will now clash with Vacherot in the last four on Saturday. Vacherot, who hails from Monaco, is in the midst of an impressive debut run in Shanghai.

The 26-year-old Vacherot booked passage into his first ATP 1000 semi-final with a 2-6, 7-6(4), 6-4 takedown of No. 10 seed Holger Rune in a three-hour face-off.

Vacherot, an unseeded qualifier in Shanghai, upset Rune to become the second lowest-ranked semi-finalist in Masters 1000 history after Chris Woodruff (No. 550) at Indian Wells in 1999. He will make his Top 100 debut on Monday as the World No. 92, a meteoric rise of 112 places in the ATP Rankings.

Rune began well against Vacherot, dropping just two games to take the opening set. However, the Dane faltered in the second set tiebreak, dropping serve thrice to surrender the set. The Scandinavian also lost his serve in the decider with the score on 3-3.

Vacherot won three of the next four games to knock out the No. 10 seed. His spot in the last four was assured when Rune’s forehand found the net on the second match point.

Preview

Djokovic has always maintained a strong connection with his Chinese fans, be it wearing red or signing the camera in Mandarin. The fans return the love with their unconditional support.

The Serb will rely on that support once more when he faces Vacherot on Saturday for a place in the finals. Djokovic is scheduled to play his tenth semi-final at the venue since making his debut in 2009 at the hard-court Masters.

Vacherot was made to work hard for his three-set victory against Holger Rune. The Monaco native will play the biggest match of his career against four-time champion Novak Djokovic.

Largely active on the Challenger and ITF circuits, Vacherot made his ATP main draw debut at Monte-Carlo last season. The fairy-tale run by the Monegasque at the ongoing Shanghai Masters represents his best result on the ATP Tour. Vacherot has a 4-1 career record on hard courts ahead of his semi-final clash with Djokovic.

Match prediction

Djokovic is the only top-five seed left in the tournament, with the next highest seeded player being Alex de Minaur at No. 7.

Following Jannik Sinner’s retirement and Alexander Zverev’s surprise third-round exit, the Serb will be the clear favourite to win a record 41st Masters 1000 title. Djokovic is chasing his first ATP 1000 win since claiming the 2023 Paris Masters event.

Vacherot’s record-breaking run in Shanghai makes him the first man from Monaco to reach the last four of a men’s singles Masters event. However, Vacherot, the underdog in this instance, may find few people in his corner in a David vs Goliath showdown.

Result: Novak Djokovic to win in straight sets.
