Novak Djokovic became the oldest finalist of an ATP 1000 event at the Miami Open 2025.

When attention in the tennis calendar shifts from the Grand Slams, it is the turn of the ATP 1000 events, also known as the Masters, to take over the spotlight. Second in terms of prestige only to the four slams, the Masters events also witnessed top players slug it out for bragging rights and ownership of the trophies.

More than a handful of players keen on proving age is just a number, continue to make a beeline for the ATP 1000 tournaments and experience success without letting their veteran status get in the way. Men’s tennis is replete with stories of players who have embraced their competitive side, even as younger players have looked to challenge the old guard.

Here are some of the men from the ATP Tour who have attained the tag of oldest finalists at Masters 1000 events.

Andre Agassi – 35 years, 101 days – Canada 2005

Andre Agassi has three Masters trophies in Canada (1992, 1994-95). When he reached the final in Toronto in the 2005 edition, he became the oldest man to reach an ATP 1000 final. Agassi, a 17-time ATP 1000 titlist, fell short of converting his final appearance at the level into another trophy.

An up-and-coming 19-year-old Rafael Nadal stopped Agassi in his tracks, ending the American’s bid for a fourth Canadian Masters title. It took just under two hours for Nadal to complete the 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 win to clinch his first Canadian Masters crown.

John Isner – 35 years, 326 days – Miami 2019

John Isner has won 16 ATP titles since turning professional in 2007 up until his retirement in 2023. His greatest success on the men’s tour was winning the 2018 Miami Open trophy. Isner fought back from a set down to defeat Alexander Zverev, 6-7(4), 6-4, 6-4 that year.

Though Isner fell short of defending his crown the following season, he became the oldest finalist in Miami. Isner, the last American to reach the final at the venue, lost to Roger Federer, 6-1, 6-4, in the 2019 championship round.

Roger Federer – 37 years, 222 days – Miami Open 2019

Roger Federer became the oldest finalist at the 2019 Miami Open. The Swiss maestro dominated the final against reigning champ John Isner 6-1, 6-4. It was his fourth title in Miami and the 101st win of his career.

Federer won the tournament in Miami in 2005, 2006 and 2017. In each of those years, he also completed the Sunshine Double. The Swiss great defeated Rafael Nadal in the title rounds in 2005 and 2016 in Miami. The 2006 win came against Croatian Ivan Ljubicic.

Rafael Nadal – 35 years, 277 days – Indian Wells 2022

Since his first victory in Monte Carlo, Rafael Nadal has won 36 ATP 1000 titles, second only to Novak Djokovic. The Spaniard has reached the championship round on 17 different occasions.

Having secured the Australian Open trophy in January that year, Nadal failed to add a fourth Indian Wells trophy to his collection. Playing his fifth final at the venue, the then 36-year-old Spaniard could not find a way past American Taylor Fritz, losing 6-3, 7-5(5) in the two-hour match.

Novak Djokovic now has six title-round appearances in Miami. The Serb reached his eighth Miami Open final with a straight-sets win over Grigor Dimitrov. Djokovic is now officially the oldest male to make the final of a Masters event.

Courtesy of the win over Dimitrov, fourth-seed Djokovic has earned a 414th career win at a Masters 1000 event, surpassing Rafael Nadal’s mark of 410 wins. It has also brought him to the doorstep of a record record seventh Miami crown and a 41st ATP Masters title. At stake is a spot alongside Jimmy Connors and Roger Federer as the third man in ATP history to win at least 100 titles.
