Tomas Etcheverry played consecutive three-set matches inside 12 hours to clinch the Rio title.
It was a chaotic last couple of days at the Rio Open 2026, with rain playing spoil sport and forcing organisers to conduct both the semi-finals and final on the same day. As the eighth seed, Tomas Martin Etcheverry produced a massive effort to lift his career’s most significant title so far.
The Argentine defeated Jamie Faria, Vit Kopriva and finally Alejandro Tabilo in the title-clash, to claim his maiden ATP title after three defeats in finals previously. The highly talented Joao Fonseca bowed out from singles event in the second round itself, losing to eventual semi-finalist Ignacio Buse.
However, the Brazilian won his first ever ATP doubles title, partnering alongside Marcelo Melo to overcome Constantin Frantzen and Robin Haase in a deciding tiebreaker.
