Novak Djokovic surpassed Rafael Nadal’s record for most match wins in ATP 1000 events.

Since the format’s inception in 1990, the ATP 1000 events have attracted some of the biggest names in men’s tennis. In terms of ranking points and prize money, they are below the Grand Slams. So it comes as no surprise that the ATP 1000 also attracts many spectators who come to watch their favorite players play. The Masters calendar includes nine events spread across the globe and various surfaces. 

Over the past few years, the top players in men’s tennis have competed in nine events on the ATP 1000 calendar. With valuable ATP ranking points and substantial prize money, they are impossible to ignore.

On that note, let’s take a look at the top five players with the most wins in the ATP 1000 events.

Novak Djokovic – (414)

Novak Djokovic has now outperformed Rafael Nadal in winning tally by a whisker. His current count of 414 wins against 94 losses translates into a winning percentage of 81.5%. The 24-time Grand Slam champion also leads in outright tournaments won – a tour-leading 40 titles. 

The Serb won his first ATP 1000 title at the Miami Open in 2007, and his most recent title was Paris Bercy in 2023. Djokovic has won 94 matches across the two events. Indian Wells contributes another 51 matches to his tally.

Despite winning 68 matches on the clay courts of Rome at the Italian Open, trips to Bercy-Paris and the seven titles won there make it his most successful Masters event. The six titles he won in Rome are on par with Miami, followed by the five in Indian Wells. 

Rafael Nadal – (410)

Rafael Nadal finished his career with a 410–90 (82%) record in the ATP 1000, which equates to 36 titles. Considering his reputation as the ‘King of Clay’, his first and last titles were on his favourite surface. The first Masters title came in Monte-Carlo (2005), while the last was in Rome (2021).

Three events accounted for a majority of Nadal’s wins at the ATP-1000 level – Monte-Carlo (73), Rome (70), and finally Madrid (59). The three venues also yielded 26 of the Spaniard’s 36 ATP 1000 trophies.

Roger Federer – (381-108)

Coming in third is the Swiss maestro, Roger Federer, who has accumulated 381 wins for 108 losses at ATP 1000 events. His win-loss record at Masters events translates into 78% and 28 titles at this level. The versatile Swiss has been most successful in Indian Wells, winning 66 matches and taking home five trophies.  

Nor far behind is his trophy haul from the Cincinnati Masters – 47 match wins and seven titles. Despite playing on clay not being his first choice, Federer picked up four titles in Hamburg and three in Madrid. His first and last ATP 1000 titles came in Hamburg (2002) and Miami (2019)

Andy Murray – (230-101)

Andy Murray earned 14 ATP 1000 titles, a substantial achievement coming as it did in the oversized shadow of the ‘Big 3.’ The Scotsman lifted his maiden Masters trophy in 2008 in Cincinnati, while his last was at the 2016 Paris Masters.

A win-loss ratio of 230-101 at the Masters level gives Murray a winning percentage of  69.5%. Wins in Canada (3) and Shanghai (3) were the largest contributors to his haul of 14 titles. Cincinnati, Madrid, and Miami, with two wins each, are next in line. 

Andre Agassi – (209-73)

Las Vegas showman Andre Agassi, who has 209 wins from 282 matches, completes the list. Agassi has an impressive 74% win rate in Masters events and won 17 titles. The first of Agassi’s ATP 1000 titles came on home turf in Miami (1990), and the last in Cincinnati (2004).

The American’s haul of 17 ATP 1000 titles is over double his Grand Slam collection (8). He was most successful in Miami, where he won six trophies, of which three were back-to-back between 2001 and 2003. His visits to Canada were on par with appearances in Cincinnati. He won three titles each at the two venues.
