Andy Murray played most matches against Novak Djokovic among tennis’ Big Three.
The ‘Big Three’ of tennis, namely, Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic, were disbanded in 2022 after the Swiss Maestro played his last match at the Laver Cup. The ‘King of Clay’ is steadily moving forward to his retirement, which can come at the end of the ongoing season or, luckily, the next. Meanwhile, aged 37, Djokovic has also played only one final in 2024, winning zero titles.
However, for two decades, the ‘Big Three’ massively dominated the tour. Winning a total of 66 Grand Slam titles from 2003 to 2023. Despite the massive dominance, a few tennis stars made the three sweat for every point.
With that being said, let’s take a look at the top five tennis stars who have won the most matches over the ‘Big Three’.
5. Lleyton Hewitt: 14 wins
One of the most successful Australian tennis players in the modern era, Lleyton Hewitt, faced the Big Three in their initial years. Hewitt also reached the No. 1 spot in the ATP rankings in 2001 after he won the US Open, the same year. The former Australian tennis star also won the 2002 Wimbledon Championships after defeating David Nalbandian in the final.
He faced Federer 27 times on the ATP tour, winning nine meetings. Meanwhile, his head-to-head record against Nadal was 4-7. On the other side, he won only once against Djokovic in their seven matches. The Aussie announced his retirement from professional tennis in 2016.
4. Dominic Thiem: 16 wins
Ruined by injuries, Dominic Thiem leads Swiss Maestro Roger Federer 5-2 in their head-to-head record. Additionally, he has recorded an impressive number of victories over Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal too. In his 15 meetings with the King of Clay, he has won six matches. Meanwhile, he has got the better of Djokovic five times in their 12 meetings.
Two-time Roland Garros runner-up and a former US Open champion, Dominic Thiem was one of the biggest young prospects on the tour before 2020. At the 2021 Mallorca Championships, he suffered a wrist injury, which forced him to withdraw during the first set of his opening-round match against Adrian Mannarino.
After multiple surgeries and comeback returns, Dominic Thiem finally announced that he will retire from the sport later this year at the young age of 30.
3. Jo-Wilfried Tsonga: 17 wins
Tied second in the list, former French tennis star Jo-Wilfried Tsonga recorded 17 wins over the Big Three during his professional tennis career. In 2008, he enjoyed a breakthrough year by reaching the final of the Australian Open, where he lost in four sets against Novak Djokovic.
However, the Frenchman never reached the final of any other Grand Slam. The former World No. 5 held a record H2H record of 6-12 against Roger Federer, 6-17 against Novak Djokovic, and 4-10 against Rafael Nadal. Jo-Wilfried Tsonga announced his complete retirement from the sport in 2022.
2. Juan Martin del Potro: 17 wins
After winning the 2009 US Open, it seemed like Juan Martin del Potro would end his career as one of the tennis greats. With a tall 6’6 stature, Juan Martin del Potro dominated his opponents from the baseline with his strong groundstrokes. However, the injuries ruined the former Argentine tennis player’s career.
He faced the Swiss Maestro 25 times on the tour, winning seven times. Against Djokovic, he has a head-to-head record of 4-16. Interestingly, he defeated the Serb twice at the Olympics. Against the King of Clay, he trailed the H2H record 6-11. Making a return, he reached the final at Flushing Meadows in 2018, eventually losing to Djokovic.
1. Andy Murray: 29 wins
Three-time Grand Slam champion Andy Murray announced his retirement from tennis at the conclusion of his campaign at the 2024 Paris Olympics. In the era of the ‘Big Three’, Andy Murray was one of the two tennis stars to win multiple Grand Slam titles.
He won two Wimbledon titles and the US Open in 2012. However, he also ended up as the runner-up in the Australian Open five times and the French Open in 2016. Additionally, he’s also the only tennis player in Olympic history to defend his gold medal.
The Scotsman held head-to-head records of 11-14 against Roger Federer, 11-25 against Novak Djokovic, and 7-17 against Rafael Nadal. An aspect that has been overlooked is that Murray’s consistency at the top level of tennis was also remarkable. He competed against arguably the greatest tennis stars of the modern era for almost 15 years. Not to forget, he was also a part of the ‘Big Four’.
