Aryna Sabalenka vs Linda Noskova

Aryna Sabalenka was not at her best against Taylor Townsend, but managed to keep her streak of not dropping a set alive

Defending US Open champion Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus might have won her fourth-round clash in emphatic style, but her first-set performance was uncharacteristic. The World No. 1 struggled to land her first serves and lacked her usual accuracy, losing her serve three times to USA’s Taylor Townsend in the opening set.

Fortunately for the Belarusian, the American was also well off her game, which helped Sabalenka capitalise on return. Sabalenka even conceded a 5-2 lead while serving for the set, and the scoreboard became tense at 5-4. But the reigning champion finally gained her range on serve, closing out with a couple of big serves.

The second set was an improvement, but Sabalenka will need to be much better to book her place in the US Open semi-finals. To do so, she will have to overcome the recently crowned Wimbledon winner Linda Noskova of the Czech Republic in the quarter-finals.

Linda Noskova of the Czech Republic overcame Ukraine’s Marta Kostyuk in a three-set epic. The match could have ended nearly an hour earlier, had the Czech managed to keep her composure when serving for the match. She missed two match points, and Kostyuk displayed remarkable grit in taking the contest to a decider.

Noskova finally closed things out, converting her sixth match point to seal the deal. Earlier this fortnight, Noskova had beaten Ann Li of the USA in another three-set battle. The 21-year-old continues to enjoy her best season, having also won Wimbledon just a few weeks ago.

Now, into her third Grand Slam quarter-final, the Czech will clash with the top seed Sabalenka for the third time. Their most recent meeting took place at Indian Wells this year, when Sabalenka prevailed comfortably in straight sets.

Match prediction

Aryna Sabalenka entered the fourth-round clash against Townsend on the back of a splendid serving display against Uzbekistan’s Kamilla Rakhimova. It took the top seed nearly one complete set to rediscover her lost rhythm. Up against a lower-ranked opponent in Townsend, it did not prove too costly.

Her Flushing Meadows consistency continues to prove that she finds a way to win matches at the US Open, even if she’s not playing her best tennis. Noskova, on the other hand, has found it extremely challenging to close out matches.

She dealt with the same issue during the Wimbledon final and squandered match points in her previous two rounds in New York, as a result of which she has had to spend far more time on court than Sabalenka, who is yet to drop a set.

Sabalenka’s freshness and more recovery time could play a role if this match goes the distance. Noskova has the credentials to eke out mistakes from the Belarusian’s racquet. However, the four-time Grand Slam champion is expected to eventually outlast her Czech opponent and book her place in a sixth consecutive US Open semi-final.

Result: Aryna Sabalenka to win in three sets.
