Novak Djokovic holds the record with four Shanghai Masters titles, the most in the tournament’s history.

The 2025 Shanghai Masters, an ATP 1000 event, kicks off on October 1 at the Qizhong Forest Sports City Arena in Shanghai, China, concluding on October 12. The tournament features a star-studded field, headlined by defending champion Jannik Sinner, hoping to bridge the gap between himself and Alcaraz.

Following his Japan Open triumph, Carlos Alcaraz announced his decision to skip Shanghai as a precautionary measure which opens up the field. Novak Djokovic, a four-time Shanghai champion, returns after finishing runner-up to Sinner last year.

Despite a lean 2025 season outside Grand Slams, the Serbian remains a contender, sharing the bottom half of the draw with Ben Shelton, Taylor Fritz, and Casper Ruud, making it one of the toughest sections in the men’s singles competition.

Alcaraz’s top half is wide open, giving a much-needed chance for the likes of Daniil Medvedev, Alex de Minaur, and Alexander Zverev to display an improved showing.

The Shanghai Open also provides potentially one final chance for Alex de Minaur, Shelton, and Lorenzo Musetti to confirm their year-end ATP Finals qualification, with live coverage on Sony, Sky UK, and Tennis Channel.
