Alexander Zverev won his second Grand Slam title in New York
Alexander Zverev of Germany has had a dream 2026 season, finishing the Slam year with a couple of Major titles. He dominated Ben Shelton in the US Open 2026 final to win in four sets. Six years after his heartbreaking final defeat, the German finally redeemed himself in Flushing Meadows.
He may have enjoyed a favourable path to the trophy, as he didn’t face a single top-20 player until the final, but that by no means diminishes his triumph. The German started his campaign on a tricky note and was only a couple of points away from an opening-round exit at the hands of Italy’s Lorenzo Sonego. However, he showed immense grit and determination to see it through.
Second German to win multiple Grand Slam titles in the same season

Zverev was regarded as the best player to have never won a Grand Slam before the 2026 calendar year. With wins in both Paris and New York now, the German becomes only the second player from his country to win multiple major titles in the same season. Boris Becker was the first German to do so, winning Wimbledon and the US Open in 1989.
Only the second man from Germany to win the US Open
Zverev is the second man and fourth overall player from Germany to win the US Open title. His 2026 title conquests put him alongside tennis legends from his homeland, including Becker, Steffi Graf, and Angelique Kerber.
Second oldest to win his first-ever US Open title
At 29 years, four months and 24 days old, Zverev is the second-oldest first-time winner of the US Open trophy.
The German came within touching distance of the title six years ago and promised himself after that defeat that he would finish the job someday. On Sunday, he finally redeemed himself.
The oldest first-time winner in the Open Era remains Stan Wawrinka, who clinched his maiden US Open by beating Novak Djokovic in 2016.
Fourth man in the Open Era to win first two Slams in the same year
After winning the 2026 US Open, Zverev became the fourth man in the Open Era to win his first two Grand Slam titles in the same season. He had earlier won the French Open, which was his first career Grand Slam title.

The other three men to have achieved this milestone are Jimmy Connors, Guillermo Vilas, and Jannik Sinner. The Italian did the same in 2024, when he won the Australian Open and the US Open.
The US Open title after 11 attempts
Zverev made his main draw debut at the US Open in 2015. He reached the final in 2020 and the semi-finals in 2021, before finally going the distance in 2026.
It took him 11 attempts to clear the hurdle, the second-highest number of appearances taken by a player to win their maiden Slam, after Stan Wawrinka.
