Five records Jannik Sinner can set/break at US Open 2025

Jannik Sinner is the reigning US Open champion.

As the US Open 2025 approaches, all eyes are on Jannik Sinner, the current world No. 1, as he aims to solidify his position at the top of the ATP rankings and defend his crown.

The Italian has already clinched the Australian Open and Wimbledon titles, and came heartbreakingly close to completing a rare triple Grand Slam season.

His loss in the French Open final to Carlos Alcaraz, after holding three championship points, leaves him close to joining the elite group of champions who have reached three major titles and a final in the fourth within the same year.

Beyond chasing rare historical achievement, Sinner arrives in New York with an impressive 31–4 record in 2025, and holds a formidable hard-court win streak, having recently accumulated 25 consecutive victories on the surface—an accomplishment shared only by tennis legends like the ‘Big Three’ and Andy Murray.

Still, a challenge looms. Sinner’s preparation was impacted by a recent illness that knocked him out of the Cincinnati Open final due to a virus, raising concerns about his readiness for Flushing Meadows. Despite the recent setback, the 24-year-old is certainly the favorite to clinch the 2025 US Open trophy.

Currently at 294 wins on the ATP tour, Sinner needs only 6 more victories to score a historic triple hundred. He can achieve this milestone at Flushing Meadows if he qualifies for the semi-finals (barring a withdrawal).

The Italian is currently 294–84, and will certainly be one of the quickest ever to reach 300 victories in Open Era history, considering his sensational form over the past two years.

Second youngest man to defend a US Open title

John McEnroe won his first US Open title in 1979 by defeating Vitas Gerulaitis in the final and later successfully defended his crown by downing Björn Borg when he was 21 years, 6 months, 22 days old.

Sinner recently turned 24, and if he defends his title this year, he will surpass tennis icon Roger Federer‘s 2005 achievement and become the second-youngest ATP player to defend his US Open title in the history of Open Era.

Only the third man to win three Grand Slams and reach the finals in the fourth, in the same calendar year

Jannik Sinner won the Australian Open and Wimbledon titles in 2025, also suffering a heartbreaking title match loss to Alcaraz at Roland Garros.

Should he go the distance in New York, the Italian will become only the third man in Open Era history to reach the finals of all four major events in the same year, and win three of them.

Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic are the other two men who came agonisingly close to completing a calendar slam.

Continue his reign as the World No. 1

As Jannik Sinner begins his 63rd consecutive week as the world’s top-ranked player, his position faces a serious challenge after a significant dip in points following his failure to defend the Cincinnati title.

If Carlos Alcaraz wins the US Open title, Sinner will have to reach the final at least to maintain his No. 1 ranking.

A title win, however, could put him on course to surpass Lleyton Hewitt’s mark of 75 weeks for the sixth-highest streak at the top in ATP history.

Youngest Man to reach Four Consecutive Grand Slam Finals in the same year

Having reached the Championship matches at the first three major events in 2025, and winning 2/3, Sinner will fancy his chances of going the distance in New York.

Arguably the best hard-court player currently in the men’s division, Sinner is well-suited to become the youngest male player at 24 years of age to achieve this feat, surpassing Roger Federer.
