Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal have faced each other 40 times on the ATP Tour.

Former Swiss tennis star Roger Federer has addressed the comparisons of his rivalry with Rafael Nadal to the rivalry between Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner.

Federer stated that it’s too early for the comparison. Nevertheless, the 20-time Grand Slam champion also lavished praise on the two young tennis stars.

He stated that Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner share equal respect for each other and have started their tennis careers on the right path. However, only time will reveal whether the two tennis players will reach the ‘Fedal’ stature.

Federer said, “Sinner and Alcaraz like me and Nadal? It’s still early, but Jannik and Carlos are from the same generation and are very strong. It seems to me that they respect each other a lot. They started on the right foot and theirs promises to be a great challenge. It’s nice to see them play.”

Jannik Sinner recently faced Carlos Alcaraz in the semi-finals at the 2024 French Open. The two played a five-set marathon; however, Sinner started suffering from cramps in his arms in the last two sets. Consequently, the Italian tennis star lost the match 2-6, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3.

Nevertheless, he became the new World No. 1 as Novak Djokovic withdrew from the quarter-finals at the clay court Grand Slam. Meanwhile, Carlos Alcaraz won his maiden French Open title and became the youngest male player to complete a surface slam. Alcaraz broke compatriot Rafael Nadal’s record to reach the milestone.

The two have started their grass season with different competitions. Alcaraz is competing at the Queen’s Club Championships, while Sinner has won his first match in Halle. Sinner and Alcaraz have faced each other nine times on the tour, with the Spaniard leading the head-to-head record at 5-4. Meanwhile, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal faced each other 40 times on the tour, with Nadal leading 24-16.

Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal also share a unique friendship that is deeply admired by the tennis world. Interestingly, the Swiss tennis legend played his last professional tennis alongside Rafael Nadal at the 2022 Laver Cup against Jack Sock and Frances Tiafoe.
