The men’s singles title is on the line as Ben Shelton faces Alexander Zverev on the final day of the US Open
Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan completed a memorable fortnight on Saturday, beating two-time reigning champion Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus 6-4, 5-7, 6-2 to win her maiden US Open 2026 title and third Grand Slam overall.
The result denied Sabalenka a third straight crown at Flushing Meadows and snapped her 19-match winning streak at the tournament. Rybakina, who also beat the Belarusian in this year’s Australian Open final, will officially become the new world No. 1 when rankings update on Monday.
Now, the attention shifts to the highly anticipated men’s singles final. Germany’s Alexander Zverev arrives as the favourite on paper, having won all five of his previous meetings with USA’s Ben Shelton, including their most recent clash at last year’s ATP Finals.
Four of those five wins came in straight sets, and the top seed has looked increasingly sharp as this tournament has progressed, dropping zero sets across his last four matches after needing five in each of his opening two. A win would give Zverev his second Grand Slam title of the season, following his French Open conquest.

For Shelton, the occasion carries a different kind of weight. A victory would make him the first American man to win a Grand Slam since Andy Roddick’s 2003 US Open title, and the first African-American man to reach this final since Arthur Ashe himself in 1972.
The American reached this stage with a stunning five-set upset over defending champion Carlos Alcaraz of Spain, and arrives looking like a player who belongs on the biggest stage — determined to make history.
