Jannik Sinner is set to face Daniil Medvedev in the quarter-finals of ATP Shanghai Masters 2024.
The 2024 season has Jannik Sinner etching his name into different record books. He uncovered yet another milestone after defeating Ben Shelton in straight sets in the fourth round of ATP Shanghai Masters 2024. Sinner entered his 14th quarter-final of the season thus entering the stage in every event he has played so far this year.
The Italian only needed an hour and 28 minutes to avenge his last year’s loss against Shelton. The American had beaten Sinner in the fourth round of ATP Shanghai Masters 2023 but since then has lost four matches against him. Shelton could cause a bit of trouble in the second set but in the first he could not get ahold of Sinner who looked completly in focus. The consistency with which he is playing this season has rewarded with him records and titles.
Sinner became the fourth man aged 23 or under to reach 14 quarter-finals in a single season. The last person to achieve the feat was John McEnroe in 1982. Jimmy Connor was the first one to do it in 1974 followed by Guillermo Vilas in 1976.
He also recorded his 62nd win of this year, the most by any player yet. Sinner became the first one in the ATP tour to secure his 60th win of 2024 after beating Taro Daniel in the opening round in Shanghai. The world No #1 has been in his best form since january and dominating his rivals with the exception of Carlos Alcaraz.

The Spaniard has been the only player who has beaten Sinner more than once so far in 2024. Sinner has lost thrice to Alcaraz and for the first time has lost two matches consecutively against his arch rival.
Jannik Sinner sets up 14th meeting against Daniil Medvedev in ATP Shanghai Masters 2024
The quarter-finals of ATP Shanghai Masters 2024 will see Sinner facing Daniil Medvedev for the 14th time. The 23-year-old trails 6-7 in their head-to-head record and won their previous meeting in the quarter-finals of US Open 2024. Medvedev is yet to earn a hard court win over Sinner this season. The pair has faced four times this season where the Russian recorded his lone win in the quarter-finals of Wimbledon.
Medvedev last recorded a hard court win over Sinner in the final of Miami Masters 2023. Since then Sinner has won six of their seven meetings. A win this time could see a Sinner- Alcaraz classic yet again. Alcaraz will face Tomas Machac in the quarter-finals as Sinner’s match is expected to start early.
The world No #2 had emerged victorious in a three hour and 21 minute encounter in the final of China Open a week back. This could be the case if Sinner and Alcaraz manage to secure wins in their matches tomorrow. While Alcaraz will hope to come clean in straight sets, Sinner will have to spend much more time on the court.
Medvedev has been on the sidelines this year and he will look to end the dominance of Sinner. The 28-year-old is yet to win a title this season. Medvedev has lost three semifinal matches and one final to Alcaraz and has tasted defeat twice against Sinner in the semifinals and once in the final. Fans will want Alcaraz versus Sinner in the semi-finals and the only person who deny a classic match is Medvedev.
