Nikolay Davydenko won the inaugural edition of Shanghai Masters.

The Shanghai Masters is an annual ATP 1000 Masters, better known as the ATP Masters Series, played annually in the first half of October. The venue for the only ATP Masters tournament outside of North America and Europe is the Qizhong Forest Sports City Arena in the Minhang District of China.

The tournament is one of the only three ATP Masters series that do not have a WTA counterpart. As of October 2024, the tournament’s prize pool is almost US$9m, one of the highest in the ATP Masters Series.

Although the tournament was founded in 2009, tennis was familiar to Chinese spectators. Two ATP International series – the Beijing Open and the Shanghai Open were already part of the ATP calendar. It was however the success of the year-end tournament the Tennis Masters Cup in 2002 and the following few years in Shanghai and the relocation of the Shanghai Open to Ho Chi Minh City and then to Mumbai that prompted the ATP to establish an ATP Masters Series event in Shanghai.

The tournament is played on hard courts, outdoors but it replaced the Madrid Open in the calendar, an indoor tournament also played on hard courts. Novak Djokovic has won the men’s singles event four times, while Brazil’s Marcelo Melo has been crowned as the champion of the men’s doubles event thrice with as many different partners.
