Ivanisevic’s coaching stint with Stefanos Tsitsipas lasted just two months.
Nearly a year after their controversial break-up Stefanos Tsitsipas has once again called upon his father, Apostolos Tsitsipas to coach him for potentially the rest of the season. The two have had a very messy past, which involves verbal confrontations and public spats on court, during live matches.
At the Montreal Open, on August 8, 2024, Tsitsipas found himself trailing 2-5 in the first set to Kei Nishikori, when he had an argument with his father. The Greek went on to criticize his father’s coaching, stating he needed a coach who listened to his feedback. The very next day, they split-up.
“I need and I deserve a coach that listens to me and hears my feedback as a player, My father hasn’t been very smart or very good at handling those situations, it’s not the first time he has done that. I’m really disappointed at him,” said Tsitsipas after his opening-round exit from Canadian Open 2024.
However, things have come a long way since, and recent developments have left Tsitsipas with no other option but to rely on the man who “first believed” in him. Taking to his Instagram, he announced his decision stating:

“Some journeys have a way of circling back to where they began. After some time apart, I’ve reunited with the person who first believed in me—my father. I’m grateful to share the court and the road ahead with him once again. We’ve been through ever chapter of this journey together, and this next one feels right. Sometimes, coming home is the boldest step forward,” the 26-year-old claimed.
Tsitsipas’ tenure with Goran Ivanisevic
Ivanisevic slammed Tsitsipas for his casual approach to tennis and went on to make some outrageous comments in a podcast, slamming the Greek for his poor fitness and inability to work hard on himself. The duo’s partnership lasted for just three months, with Tsitsipas’ opening round loss at Wimbledon 2025 being their last match together.
Shortly after the Croatian’s statements, he was sacked by the two-time Grand Slam finalist, who was understandably unhappy with his coach’s words.

Tsitsipas’ current form
The 26-year-old’s poor run of form extended to the Canadian Masters, where he bowed out in the opening round itself after defeat to Australia’s Christopher O’Connell 4-6, 6-4, 2-6. This was his second consecutive exit on tour.
Having won just one match across his last four Grand Slam appearances, the Greek star’s form has been underwhelming. His on-court struggles appear compounded by reported tensions within his team and ongoing speculation about a potential split with girlfriend Paula Badosa, further fuelling his dip in performance.
Why did Stefanos Tsitsipas reunite with his father Apostolos as coach?
After a short-lived and controversial stint with former coach Goran Ivanisevic, Tsitsipas decided to return to his roots by reuniting with his father Apostolos. Despite their rocky past and on-court spats, Tsitsipas stated that his father was the one who “first believed” in him and described the reunion as a bold step forward.
What led to the end of Tsitsipas’ partnership with Goran Ivanisevic?
The partnership ended after Ivanisevic criticized Tsitsipas publicly, accusing him of lacking discipline and work ethic. The final straw was Tsitsipas’ first-round exit at Wimbledon 2025, after which Ivanisevic was sacked.
How has Tsitsipas been performing recently?
Tsitsipas is currently ranked No. 30 and is set to play Christopher O’Connell at the 2025 Toronto Open. His recent form has been underwhelming, with only one Grand Slam match win in his last four appearances.
What happened during the Tsitsipas–Apostolos split in 2024?
At the 2024 Canadian Open, Tsitsipas had a public argument with his father during a match against Kei Nishikori. After the loss, he openly criticized Apostolos for not listening to him, leading to their split the very next day.
