Ostapenko thrashed Sabalenka and Swiatek to win her eighth singles title.
Jelena Ostapenko etched her name into the history books by becoming the first woman since Serena Williams in 2012 to defeat both the World No #1 and No #2 at the same clay-court event, storming to the Stuttgart Open 2025 title.
The Latvian stunned the top two players in the world, dispatching No #2 Iga Swiatek in the quarterfinals 6-3, 3-6, 6-2, and then overpowering World No #1 Aryna Sabalenka 6-4, 6-1 in the final. Ostapenko overcame a formidable draw, which included Emma Navarro, Swiatek, Ekaterina Alexandrova, and Sabalenka.
Her dominance over Swiatek continued, with the head-to-head record now standing at a remarkable 6-0 in her favour. Ranked No #24, she also became the second-lowest-ranked woman ever to beat both the No #1 and No #2 players at the same tournament on any surface, after Barbora Krejcikova, who achieved the feat in Dubai 2023 while ranked No #30.
As for Sabalenka, despite the defeat, her strong start to the clay-court swing remains encouraging. The Belarusian will be eager to bounce back and chase silverware at the upcoming Madrid Open.
