The clash between Iga Swiatek vs Jelena Ostapenko has been a one-sided affair.

Jelena Ostapenko has been arguably Iga Swiatek‘s most feared opponent on court. Although it is difficult to reconcile the Latvian’s astonishing lead to his dominance on the pole, it has now perhaps become a mental hurdle for Swiatek every time the pair face off.

The five-time Grand Slam champion leads both Aryna Sabalenka and Coco Gauff, on head-to-head. These two are considered the best WTA players alongside Swiatek from the current generation. However, Ostapenko has managed to crack the code against the former World Number One which very few have been able to do.

The pair met for the first time at the Birmingham Classic, with Ostapenko defeating the Pole in straight sets. The manner of the defeat was appalling, as Swiatek could manage to win only 2 games during the match. Their next exchange came in 2021, which marked their first meet-up in a WTA 1000 tournament. Swiatek, who eventually won the Indian Wells in 2022 and 2024, was downed by Ostapenko in 2021, in convincing fashion.

In their only battle in 2022, Iga Swiatek finally won her first set over Ostapenko in the final of the Dubai Open. The match headed into a decider set which ultimately ended in a tie-break, with Ostapenko prevailing 7-4. In 2023, Swiatek and Ostapenko faced each other for the first time in a Grand Slam.

Swiatek was the reigning champion at the US Open, having won the event in 2022 and was on course to defend her title. Despite being at the peak of her powers as the World Number One back then, Ostapenko crushed the Pole in the decider set. Having prevented Swiatek from breaking several records, the Latvian entered the Qatar Open semi-final with a definite target.

Swiatek was a 3-time consecutive winner in Doha and looked unbeatable in the 2025 edition too. With arch-rivals like Aryna Sabalenka, Elena Rybakina, and Coco Gauff out of the way, a historic fourth straight win looked imminent.

However, it wasn’t meant to be as Swiatek looked clueless and hapless on the court against Ostapenko. The crushing defeat in straight sets dejected the always-calm Pole to such an extent that he even broke his racket in anger and rage.

While the four-time French Open champion is undoubtedly the more skilled and accomplished player, Ostapenko holds a significant psychological edge in their encounters. Her flawless record against Swiatek is bound to be broken—it’s only a matter of when the former World No. 1 can turn the tide.
