Sumit Nagal was on a nine-match unbeaten streak in ATP Challenger tournaments before his loss.

Sumit Nagal lost to home favourite and top seed Luciano Darderi 1-6, 2-6 in the final of the 2024 Perugia Challenger on Sunday, June 16. However, he reached his career-best ranking of #71 in the newly revised list.

The Indian tennis star has been in stellar form for the last two weeks. After an early elimination in the first round of the 2024 French Open, Sumit Nagal won the Heilbronn Challenger title by defeating Switzerland’s Alexander Ritschard in the final.

Later, Nagal entered the Perugia Challenger, where he was seeded third. With three resounding victories, the Indian tennis star reached the semifinals in Italy, where he faced former World No. 37 Bernabé Zapata Miralles. Nagal stunned the Spaniard in three sets to reach the final.

However, Nagal’s fairytale run was halted in the final of the Perugia Challenger, where he lost against home hope Luciano Darderi 6-1, 6-2. Darderi is currently 34 in the ATP rankings, and he has a win/loss record of 17/9 this year.

However, his run ensured that he jumped seven spots to become the new ATP World No. #71. Nagal is currently at his career-best ranking, and he has a realistic chance of entering the top 50. After the match, he took to social media and sent his fans a message, in which he affirmed that he was shifting his focus to the Wimbledon preparations.

He captioned the post, “What a fortnight! Left it all out there on the court in the last couple of weeks. Super proud of the results. Time to rest and recover for Wimbledon.”

Sumit Nagal will be making his main draw debut at the Wimbledon Championships in 2024. Grass is not his preferred surface, however, he’d be looking forward to getting a decent start and winning a few matches at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club.
