Top-level tennis is not played on carpet surfaces.

Tennis has never failed when it comes to entertainment. From thrills to drama, this sport offers everything that a spectator or analyst can enjoy. Apart from the players, the court surface also plays a big role in the dramatic events that take place when the ball hits the racket. Hard courts are the fastest and also offer a high bounce, which is better suited for agile players.

Meanwhile, an all-around tennis star has better chances to flourish on the grass surface due to its characteristics of pace and low bounce. Clay is utterly inverse in behaviour.

The ball skids on the red dirt, the speed decreases, and making cuts is also difficult. All surfaces are difficult in some way, but all are interesting to witness. Earlier, top-level tennis was also played on carpet, but later. The surface was ruled out for the ATO and WTA tours.

Hard: Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic: 71 titles

Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic have won the same number of titles, 71, on the hard court. However, tennis stars have a very different playing style. However, their skill set has been equally successful on the blue surface.

When it comes to the Grand Slam, the Serbian tennis star (14) leads the Swiss maestro (11). Interestingly, the third member of the Big Three, Rafael Nadal, has won only 25 titles on hardcourt.

Clay: Rafael Nadal: 63 titles

Rafael Nadal, also known as the King of Clay, was nicknamed for his astounding athletic brilliance on the red dirt. Widely regarded as the best southpaw in the sport’s history, Nadal has also solidified his spot as the greatest clay player.

14 Roland Garros titles with an improbable win-loss record of 112-4 on the Parisian clay, the Spaniard’s success at the French Open is formidable.

Grass: Roger Federer: 19 titles

Roger Federer‘s style was best suited to the green surface. The Swiss maestro has won 19 grass court titles in the Open Era, a record unlikely to be broken soon. Out of his 19 titles, eight came at the Wimbledon Championships, ten at the Halle, and one at the Stuttgart Open.

He also holds the record for the longest unbeaten streak on grass in the Open Era with 65 consecutive victories between 2003 and 2008.

Carpet: John McEnroe: 43 titles

The second fastest tennis surface after grass, carpet, was last used on the tour in Quebec City for a WTA event. However, it is still used for the ATP Challenger and ITF circuit-level tournaments. The carpet surface was created with sand and artificial turf, which offered low bounce and fast movement.

The surface was introduced into professional tennis in the late 1960s. It gained immediate popularity among tennis fans due to the pace it offered. There was a time when the ATP Finals, Paris Masters, and other top tournaments used to take place on carpet.

John McEnroe holds the record for the most titles on the surface, 43, while Jimmy Connors is second on the list with 39 accolades. However, the surface eventually lost its relevance on the tour in the 21st century.
