Top five title favourites in men's singles at Canadian Open 2025

With Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz out, the tournament opens up for the rest of the field.

The Canadian Open 2025 men’s tournament begins July 26 in Toronto, with main draw matches from July 27 at Sobeys Stadium. This marks the 135th edition of the ATP Masters 1000 event, featuring an expanded 96-player singles draw for the first time.

The lack of an ATP clause has been central to this saga, with a large number of players withdrawing due to scheduling constraints being a major problem.

The likes of Jannik Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz, Novak Djokovic, and Jack Draper are all out, thereby giving a golden chance for the rest of the players to win the Masters 1000 event and make significant gains on the ATP rankings chart. Here we take a look at the five most likely contenders to triumph in Toronto.

Men’s singles title favourites at Canadian Open 2025

5. Alex de Minaur

Alex de Minaur has steadily emerged as a reliable contender on the ATP Tour, known for his speed, grit, and relentless baseline play. The Australian reached his first Masters final at the 2023 Canadian Open, defeating back-to-back top ten players in Taylor Fritz and Daniil Medvedev, and will be eager to go one step further this time and consolidate his position in the top-10 ATP rankings.

De Minaur has the momentum as well, having clinched his first title of the 2025 season just a few hours back, in Washington.

4. Holger Rune

Holger Rune has had a modest season, with the Barcelona Open triumph being his sole achievement. The Danish have struggled with consistency and been unable to carry any momentum whatsoever. He reached the final at Indian Wells earlier this season and will be hoping to repeat such heroics in this North American swing, after his brief sessions with Andre Agassi.

Rune entered Canada on the back of a last-minute withdrawal from the Washington Open and had lost his opening round to Nicholas Jarry at Wimbledon. The 22-year-old reached the fourth round here last year and will be hoping to go the distance in the absence of any big names.

3. Ben Shelton

Ben Shelton has been one of the most consistent players on the ATP tour, heavily relying on his strong yet consistent serving.

The American has been unlucky in many ways, losing to either Sinner or Alcaraz in all three Grand Slams this year. With none of those big names playing in Toronto, Shelton is a promising candidate to clinch the crown and win his maiden Masters.

2. Alexander Zverev

Alexander Zverev is the top seed, but arrives on the back of a shocking Wimbledon first-round loss. He spoke about mental health struggles and recently spotted training alongside Toni Nadal.

The German will have learned some invaluable tricks which he will want to apply in his upcoming events, and will be eager to take advantage of this weak ATP section. His only Canadian Open triumph came back in 2017, and he will be vying for his first Masters 1000 title this year.

1. Taylor Fritz

Taylor Fritz is arguably the best hard-court player amongst those competing this year in Canada. At SW19 this year, he registered his best-ever campaign, reaching the semi-finals and even troubling Carlos Alcaraz to an extent. However, he suffered a setback in Washington, losing the quarter-finals to Alejandro Davidovich Fokina.

The American has won just one Masters 1000, back in 2022 in Indian Wells. Back in home conditions and on his best surface, the World No. 5 will certainly fancy his chances to claim his first-ever Canadian Open title.
