In 2024, the tennis courts witnessed some intriguing matches and iconic performances in the tournaments. From the top seeds to the qualifiers, everyone is giving their all to secure a victory in their respective matches.

The Italian Open 2024 has been nothing short of theatrical, with several underdogs making headlines after defeating top-ranked tennis stars. While some of the big names have advanced to the semifinals or finals, others have faltered at the very start of the tournament.

In this article, we will have a look at the top five wins in the Italian Open 2024 which turned out to upsets.

5. Sorana Cirstea defeating Marketa Vondrousova

In the women’s singles category, a major upset occurred when the sixth seed, Marketa Vondrousova, was defeated by the 28th seed, Sorana Cirstea, in the Round of 32 with sets of 6-7, 3-6.

Marketa had a promising start to the tournament with a hard-fought win against Ana Bogdan (6-2, 3-6, 6-4) in the Round of 64. However, the Czech Republic player lost her subsequent match and had to exit the Italian Open 2024, much to her disappointment.

4. Miomir Kecmanovic defeating Casper Ruud

The fifth seed, Casper Ruud, was eliminated in his very first match of the tournament in the second round after receiving a bye in the first round. The three-time semi-finalist faced Miomir Kecmanovic in the Round of 64. The match began with Ruud taking the lead in the first set, but he faltered in the subsequent sets, losing the match with scores of 6-0, 4-6, 4-6.

Interestingly, the unseeded Miomir, after winning his first two matches, lost his third match to Thiago Monteiro with scores of 2-6, 6-4, 6-7. The second-round exit marked Ruud’s worst performance of the year in all the ATP 1000 tournaments he has participated in so far.

3. Tommy Paul defeating Daniil Medvedev

The defending champion and second seed, Daniil Medvedev, was not only a top competitor, but also a title contender in the tournament. With two consecutive wins, he was on his way to the top-tier battles on the court. Unfortunately, his journey was halted by Tommy Paul in the Round of 16, with scores of 1-6, 4-6.

After defeating Medvedev, Paul overcame Hubert Hurkacz in the fourth round to reach the semi-finals of the tournament. There, he was defeated by Nicolas Jarry with scores of 3-6, 7-6, and 3-6. Jarry secured his spot in the final for the ultimate showdown against the third seed, Alexander Zverev.

2. Rohan Bopanna and Matthew Ebden facing defeat in the second round

The poor form on the court followed Rohan Bopanna and his partner Matthew Ebden in the Italian Open 2024 as they were defeated in the second round of the men’s doubles category by the team of Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori.

Bopanna and Ebden started the tournament with a win against the pair of Francesco Passaro and Matteo Arnaldi by 6-2, 6-2 in the Round of 32. In the next round, they never found the momentum on their side and lost the match by 2-6, 4-6 sets. This is the pair’s fourth early exit in ATP 1000 Masters tournament in the ongoing year.

All eyes were on the current world No. 1 men’s tennis player Novak Djokovic who returned to the court after a while. In his very first match of the tournament, he defeated Corentin Moutet (6-3, 6-1).

It was the Round of 32, where the six-time Italian Open champion had to face defeat while competing against the 29th-seeded Alejandro Tabilo (2-6, 3-6). The win provided the much-needed confidence to Tabilo who entered the Italian Open 2024 semi-finals, where he was defeated by Alexander Zverev.
