United Cup: Full list of title winners
Team Germany will enter the competition as defending champions.
The United Cup is an international hard court tennis competition featuring mixed-gender teams from 18 countries. The first event was held in December 2022 until January 2023. The event is played across multiple Australian cities over 11 days in the build-up to the Australian Open. It is also the first mixed-gender team event to offer both ATP rankings and WTA rankings points to its players, with a maximum of 500 points for the winners.
On 7 August 2022, Tennis Australia announced that the ATP Cup, which was an international outdoor hard court men’s team competition played in the Australian summer, would be shut down and replaced by a mixed-gender event from 2023.
18 countries qualify for the tournament. Five countries based on the ATP ranking of their No. 1 ranked singles player, Five based on the WTA ranking of their No. 1 ranked singles player and the final eight countries based on the combined ranking of their number one ranked ATP and WTA players.
In exchange for being the host nation, Australia is guaranteed one of the spots reserved for teams with the best combined ranking if it fails to qualify on its own.
2023 Tennis United Cup
The 2023 United Cup was the first edition of the United Cup, an international outdoor hard court mixed-gender team tennis competition held by the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) and the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA).
Serving as the opener for the 2023 ATP Tour and the 2023 WTA Tour, it was held from 29 December 2022 to 8 January 2023 at three venues in the Australian cities of Brisbane, Perth, and Sydney. It was also the first mixed-gender team event to offer both ATP rankings and WTA rankings points to its players: a player was able to win a maximum of 500 points.
The United States defeated Italy in the tennis finals, 4–0, to capture the inaugural 2023 United Cup. The United States swept Poland in the semifinals while Italy lost one match in their defeat of Greece. In group A, Greece led by Maria Sakkari, Stefanos Tsitsipas and Grigor Dimitrov comfortably topped the table, with Belgium and Bulgaria being eliminated.
For Group B, it was Poland led by Iga Swiatek and Hubert Hurkacz, who topped the group beating Kazakhstan and Switzerland. United States finished first in Group C defeating Germany and the Czech Republic, led by a strong lineup including Taylor Fritz, Jessica Pegula, Frances Tiafoe, and Madison Keys. Italy and Croatia cleared their groups comfortably.
The toughest of the lot was Group D won by Great Britain led by Cameron Norrie and Dan Evans beating formidable opponents in the form of Spain led by Rafael Nadal and Paula Badosa along with Australia represented by Alex de Minaur. In the knockout stages, Greece defeated Croatia, Poland beat Italy and the United States beat Great Britain.
Semi-final 1 was played between Poland and the USA, wherein the Americans dominated the contest from the beginning, with the top seed Iga Swiatek losing to Pegula. Meanwhile, Italy led by Lorenzo Musetti triumphed over Greece to set a date with the USA in the finale. The final was a one-sided affair with the Americans prevailing comfortably over the Italians, winning 4-0.
2024 Tennis United Cup
The 2024 United Cup had a total prize money pool of US$10,000,000. This was 33.33% lower than in 2023 due to fewer matches being played. The distribution was split into three components: participation fee, match wins, and team wins.
In the group stages, Poland knocked out Spain and Brazil, with Iga Swiatek and Hubert Hurkacz leading from the front. Greece continued with their good form while home team Australia knocked out the defending champions, USA along with Great Britain.
Both France and Germany qualified from Group D with Italy, the runner-ups from the last season Italy being eliminated. Novak Djokovic led Serbia and proceeded to the knockouts alongside China and Norway. In the knockout stages, Australia beat Serbia with the former world number one Novak Djokovic shockingly going down to Alex de Minaur.
A closely fought QF between Germany and Greece saw Alexander Zverev and company powering their nation to the semis. Comfortable wins followed for Poland and France against China and Norway respectively. Semi-final 1 was fought between Poland and France with Swiatek and Hurkacz powering the Polish to a dominant 3-0 win.
The Germans emerged victorious over the Australians despite de Minaur’s strong performance. The stage for the final of the 2024 United Cup was set between Poland and Germany. Iga Swiatek beat the experienced Angelique Kerber in straight sets. However, Germany had other plans as they staged a tremendous comeback led by Alexander Zverev to win the championship.
