ATP 500 action returns to Tokyo as Carlos Alcaraz defends his title at the Japan Open 2026. The Spaniard is in Tokyo after a disappointing US Open 2026 campaign, where he exited in the quarter-finals to Ben Shelton of the USA.
While Shelton has withdrawn from the tournament, Taylor Fritz and Rafael Jodar will be among those in action at the Japan Open Tennis Championships. Local hero Kei Nishikori will be making his final appearance at the tournament. He was the last homegrown champion, winning the title in 2014.
In last year’s final, Alcaraz defeated Taylor Fritz in straight sets to clinch the 2025 Japan Open title. Alcaraz is seeking his third title of 2026. The 23-year-old began the season with a title at the Australian Open before following it up with another triumph in Doha. He faces American Alex Michelsen in the opening round and is seeded to clash with Fritz in the semi-finals.
Frances Tiafoe of the USA is the No. 2 seed and leads the bottom half of the draw. Tiafoe shares the same half of the draw as Spaniard Rafael Jodar and could face the 20-year-old in the semi-finals. Jodar is ninth in the PIF ATP Live Race To Turin.
Holger Rune returns to action after a long injury-related layoff and faces Frenchman Kyrian Jacquet in the opening round. Jodar will face Adolfo Daniel Vallejo, while Brandon Nakashima takes on Ugo Humbert and Jiri Lehecka meets Zizou Bergs in a series of intriguing first-round matchups to kick off the week-long Japan Open.
