Carlos Alcaraz will start his US Open 2024 campaign against Tu Lu.
Much like the first day at Flushing Meadows, the second day of the 2024 US Open also offers spectacular action with multiple top stars in action. Iga Swiatek, Aryna Sabalenka, Carlos Alcaraz, and more will commence their campaign in New York.
Thus, without any further delay, let’s take a look at the top five matches on Day 2 of the 2024 US Open:
US Open 2024 Day 2 (August 27) Predictions
5. Carlos Alcaraz vs Tu Lu
Currently ranked 186th, Australia’s Tu Lu has a huge challenge in front of him in the first round. He will face four-time Grand Slam champion Carlos Alcaraz in his opening match at the 2024 US Open. The Spaniard has won three titles this year, out of which two are Grand Slam titles, in addition to an Olympic silver medal.
Most notably, he has stunned the likes of Jannik Sinner, Novak Djokovic, Alexander Zverev, and Daniil Medvedev in the past couple of months. Meanwhile, Tu Lu has played only two matches on the tour, losing both. Alcaraz will face Lu for the first time on the tour.
Prediction: Carlos Alcaraz to win the straight sets.
4. Iga Swiatek vs Kamilla Rakhimova
Iga Swiatek will commence her 2024 US Open campaign against Russia’s Kamilla Rakhimova at the Authur Ashe Stadium. Rakhimova was the top seed in the qualification round but she lost to Priscilla Hon in the final qualifier. She secured a spot in the main draw as a lucky loser. However, she’s not really lucky as she has crossed paths with Swiatek.
Rakhimova reached the third round in Flushing Meadows in 2021, but she’s currently out of the top 100 rankings. The two tennis stars will face each other for the first time on the tour. Interestingly, Priscilla Hon will face second seed Aryna Sabalenka at the Louis Armstrong Stadium.
Prediction: Iga Swiatek to win in straight sets.
3. Jack Draper vs Zhang Zhizhen
British No. 1 Jack Draper will face China’s top-ranked tennis star Zhang Zhizhen in his opening-round match at the last Grand Slam of the season. Zhang reached the quarterfinals at the 2024 German Open and has failed to win a title this season.
However, he has given tough competition to all his opponents. Meanwhile, Jack Draper won a grasscourt title in June and he’s currently ranked 25, his career-best. Interestingly, the two tennis stars will face each other for the first time on the tour and the winner of the match has a high possibility of meeting Carlos Alcaraz in the third round.
Prediction: Zhang Zhizhen to win in five sets.
2. Stefanos Tsitsipas vs Thanasi Kokkinakis
Currently going through a different time, Stefanos Tsitsipas is seeded 11th at the US Open. He will face Australia’s Thanasi Kokkinakis at Grandstand in a mouth-watering first-round match. Tsitsipas recently parted ways with his father as his coach and he lost to Jack Draper in the round of 16 in Cincinnati.
Before Cincinnati, he suffered a second-round exit against a returning Kei Nishikori. The two have faced each other once and their only meeting took place in the second round of the 2021 Australian Open. The match turned out to be a five-set marathon, where Tsitsipas outclassed Thanasi Kokkinakis.
Prediction: Stefanos Tsitsipas to win the four sets.
1. Jasmine Paolini vs Bianca Andreescu
Jasmine Paolini, who reached the women’s singles final at the Wimbledon Championships and Roland Garros, will start her US Open campaign against former champ, Bianca Andreescu. The Canadian tennis star defeated Serena Williams to win the US Open in 2019. At the same time, she also reached her career-best ranking of 4.
They faced each other earlier this year at Wimbledon, where Paolini secured the win 7-6 (7-4), 6-1. While Jasmine Paolini has enjoyed a breakthrough season, Andreescu’s struggles with her form and injuries have continued to restrict her from performing her best. However, at a familiar court, Andreescu is expected to be an improved performance.
Prediction: Jasmine Paolini to win in three sets.
More matches:
Emma Raducanu vs Sofia Kenin
Former champion Emma Raducanu will face 2020 Australian Open winner Sofia Kenin in her opening-round match. Aiming to avoid injuries, Raducanu missed the 2024 Paris Olympics and has played limited tennis this year. Meanwhile, Sofia Kenin has focused more on doubles this year. Thus, with both players struggling in singles action, the match will be a survival of the fittest.
Prediction: Emma Raducanu to win in three sets.
Lorenzo Senego vs Tommy Paul
Wimbledon quarter-finalist Tommy Paul will face Italy’s Lorenzo Senego in the first round at Flushing Meadows. Paul has won two titles this season with a win-loss record of 35-14. Meanwhile, Lorenzo Senego recently won the Winston-Salem Open by defeating Alex Michelsen in the final. The two have faced each other twice on the tour, winning one match.
Prediction: Tommy Paul to win in four sets.
