The 2025 US Open will get underway on a Sunday.

The US Open organisers have expanded the New York-based tournament to 15 days this season, moving to a Sunday start for the first time in the Open Era. The first round will be spread over three days, beginning with Sunday. With the change, Wimbledon is the only Grand Slam to get underway on Monday and is precisely a fortnight long.

The competition is scheduled to begin on Sunday, August 24, and run through Sunday, September 7, at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, New York.

The 2024 US Open defending champions, Jannik Sinner and Aryna Sabalenka, will have to contend with a surge of American talent making its presence felt in the sport. Six Americans are now in the top ten of the ATP and WTA singles rankings after the 2025 Australian Open.

Newly crowned 2025 Australian Open titlist Madison Keys and quarterfinalist Tommy Paul are the newest entrants to the club. Keys, who became the World No. #7 on winning her maiden Slam, joins No. #3 Coco Gauff, No. #6 Jessica Pegula and No. #9 Emma Navarro in the WTA top ten. Paul, ranked No. #9, made his top 10 debut on Monday thanks to a quarter-final run in Melbourne.

Tommy Paul joins last year’s US Open finalist, Taylor Frtiz (4), in the ATP top 10. American Ben Shelton is knocking on the doors of the top ten after his semi-final run in Melbourne.

Sinner retained his Australian Open title, but Sabalenka came up short in her pursuit of three consecutive titles in Melbourne. Italy’s Sinner will not be playing in Rotterdam, where he is the defending champion. Jakub Mensik will take Sinner’s place in the main draw, while the Italian could next be seen in action at the Indian Wells Masters in March.

World No. #1 Sabalenka and No. #2 Iga Swiatek lead the field for upcoming WTA 1000 events in Qatar (beginning February 9) and Dubai (beginning February 16). Sabalenka has a slim lead over Swiatek in the WTA rankings as the WTA tennis calendar moves to the Middle East.
