Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz is second to John McEnroe’s Open Era record.

Spanish tennis star Carlos Alcaraz has achieved a remarkable feat in his young career, securing his 60th Grand Slam match win in just 70 matches. This accomplishment places him second only to tennis legend John McEnroe in men’s singles in the Open Era, which began in 1968.

Alcaraz reached this milestone after defeating Australian qualifier Li Tu in the first round of US Open 2024. Despite facing a tough challenge, the 21-year-old Spaniard emerged victorious with a score of 6-2, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1.

This achievement shows Alcaraz’s exceptional performance in major tournaments. His record translates to a winning rate of about 86% in Grand Slam events, showing his ability to compete effectively against the world’s top players on the biggest stages in tennis.

To put this accomplishment into perspective, Alcaraz has reached 60 wins faster than modern tennis greats like Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic did at similar points in their careers. Only McEnroe, who achieved the same feat in 69 matches, has done it quicker.

Alcaraz’s rapid rise in the tennis world have been there to see by his Grand Slam title count. At just 21 years old, he has already claimed four major championships: the US Open in 2022, Wimbledon in 2023, and both the French Open and Wimbledon in 2024.

His 2024 season has been particularly impressive. Alcaraz reached the quarterfinals of the Australian Open for the first time in his career. He then went on to win his first French Open title, becoming the youngest player to win Grand Slam singles titles on three different surfaces.

By successfully defending his Wimbledon title, he also became the youngest player to achieve the “Channel Slam” – winning the French Open and Wimbledon in the same year.

As Alcaraz continues his campaign at the 2024 US Open, all eyes will be on him to see if he can add to his growing list of accomplishments. Alcaraz now faces the Netherland’s Botic Van De Zandschulp in the US Open 2024 second round.
