Watch: Did Aryna Sabalenka abuse Amanda Anisimova after losing in Wimbledon 2025 semi-final?

Aryna Sabalenka was upset by Amanda Anisimova’s behaviour in the second set.

Aryna Sabalenka suffered yet another heartbreaking defeat in a Grand Slam major, as she lost her third semi-final at Wimbledon, with the dreams of lifting the prestigious trophy staying unfulfilled. When the World No. 1 goes down, or is in a losing position, she often loses her composure, redirecting her anger either on her team, racquet, or opponent.

The 27-year-old was angry at her opponent, Amanda Anisimova, during the second set. “I was just trying to chase the ball. She was already celebrating it. I mean, that’s a bit too early. Then she pissed me off saying oh, that’s what she does all the time”, the three-time Grand Slam champion alleged.

However, she quickly claimed that the American’s behaviour helped Sabalenka force a turnaround in the second set. “I was grateful that she said that because it helped me to keep fighting. I’m like, ‘OK, now I’m going to show you the tennis,” said the top seed.

However, another moment of controversy erupted at the end of the second set when the ball clipped the net, and the point went in favor of Anisimova. The general tradition, and basic etiquette in such a situation, is to put your hand or racquet up in apology. But the 23-year-old celebrated her triumph, which certainly did not please the Belarusian.

“I just looked at her and, I mean, for sure she didn’t hear me. I was like, ‘You don’t want to say sorry?’ She just wanted, I guess, badly to win this match,” Sabalenka said in her post-match press conference.

Aryna Sabalenka was in big trouble after her loss in the Roland Garros final, where she said Coco Gauff won because of her mistakes. She also said that if Iga Swiatek had been in her place, Gauff wouldn’t have had a chance.

However, this time, at Wimbledon 2025, the World No. 1 ensured she didn’t make any such controversial remark. Her actions in Paris invited a huge backlash, led by the American mainstream media. However, things settled down after both were seen in a viral dance reel.

The Wimbledon 2025 semi-finalist began her conference with a cheeky comment: “Are you guys waiting for something? You’re not going to see the Roland Garros press conference, so anyone who was waiting for that, you can leave right now”.

Sabalenka’s ability to find humor just after a gut-wrenching loss, to end a brilliant campaign, is commendable. Losing your temper in a sport like tennis is normal, and fans and pundits need to realise that tennis players are mere humans, not robots.
