Alcaraz bowed out in the third round in Shanghai

Carlos Alcaraz’s run at the Shanghai Masters 2026 ended in the third round, with the Spaniard going down 5-7, 6-7(4) to Belgium’s Zizou Bergs. The match lasted just over two hours, and Bergs closed it out on his first match point.

The loss interrupted the Spaniard’s strong comeback after he clinched the Japan Open title only a few days back.

Alcaraz’s early exit in Shanghai leaves him with a 6-3 record at the tournament. He struggled with his forehand and made too many errors. A double fault in the 11th game of the first set gave Bergs a critical break point. Bergs also used the court’s fast conditions well, rushing the net to break up Alcaraz’s rhythm.

The 23-year-old Spaniard was candid afterwards. He admitted that he did not play his best tennis and hoped to come back strongly.

Alcaraz, a seven-time Grand Slam champion, has won 11 of his 13 tour-level matches since returning from a four-month injury layoff. The ultimate goal for this season will be to win the ATP Finals in Turin.

Alcaraz now has a short break before he plays again. His next event is the Six Kings Slam, scheduled for October 21 to 24 (with October 23 as a rest day), and it will be live streamed on Netflix.

The Riyadh exhibition event, however, is not completely certain, given the current security concerns due to the ongoing conflict between Saudi Arabia and Yemen.

Should the event take place, Alcaraz will be joined by Novak Djokovic, Alexander Zverev, Taylor Fritz Alex de Minaur and Learner Tien. After the exhibition, he goes back on the ATP Tour to play the final ATP-1000 event of year, the Paris Masters, starting on November 2.
