The defending champion has looked sharp in her title defense, not dropping a set in her first two matches. In the first round the Belarusian dismantled the 26-year-old Swiss player Simona Waltert 7-5, 6-1. She then, took down Russia’s Polina Kudermetova sealing 7-6(4), 6-2 win in the second round.
Sabalenka is coming on the back of a stunning 6-3, 7(7)-6(2) win over the Washington Open 2025 winner Leylah Fernandez making her fifth consecutive appearance in the second week at US Open.
The current WTA world no.1 has already enjoyed a strong 2025 season with titles in Brisbane, Miami, and Madrid. However, she is still chasing her first Grand Slam of the year, having last lifted a major at the 2024 US Open.
In New York, apart from defending her crown, Sabalenka is also battling to keep her World No.1 ranking, with both Iga Swiatek and Coco Gauff still in contention to dethrone her depending on their runs in New York.
On the other hand, Cristina Bucsa is on her way to scripting history at the Flushing Meadows by reaching the fourth round of the US Open for the first time in her career. The world No. 93 produced one of her best performances in New York, upsetting 19th seed Elise Mertens 3-6, 7-5, 6-3 in third round.
The Spaniard has been in fine form throughout the tournament, dropping just one set in three matches. She began her campaign with a commanding 6-2, 6-1 win over Claire Liu in the first round, followed by a confident 6-4, 6-3 victory against Alexandra Eala in the second.
This will be the first-ever meeting between Aryna Sabalenka and Cristina Bucsa.
