Tomas Martin Etcheverry is making his third appearance in The Principality. He rallied past Fenchman Terence Atmane 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 to reach the third round in Monte Carlo for the first time.
The 26-year-old who recently secured the Rio Open title faces an uphill battle against Alcaraz. Etcheverry trails Alcaraz from their sole head-to-head from their days on the Challenger circuit.
Etcheverry played it safe on Wednesday, registering 12 winners and 19 unforced errors en route to his second-round victory over Atmane. He made the most of Atmane’s 40 unforced errors to progress into the third round of the ATP 1000 event.
Also back in action on Day 6 of the tournament is Jannik Sinner. The Italian will take on Tomas Machac in his third-round match. Alcaraz will take on Etcheverry on Court Rainier III following the Sinner–Machac face-off.
