Teenager just recently reached semifinals 2025 Mumbai Open WTA 125 as an unseeded wildcard.

Indian tennis has experienced a major shake-up this week, with 15-year-old Maaya Rajeshwaran Revathi stepping into the spotlight as the country’s most exciting prospect since Sania Mirza. You might wonder what she accomplished?

Revathi’s unexpected journey to the semifinals of the 2025 Mumbai Open WTA 125 as an unranked wildcard has people speculating whether she’ll become India’s next tennis sensation. Let’s get right to it and introduce this rising star.

Early years and background

Maaya was born on June 12, 2009, in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu. Her tennis story began in a simple way – as an activity after school to keep a lively child busy. What started as casual play soon showed signs of something special. By age eight, her natural skills became clear prompting a move from casual play to dedicated training.

Foundation years

Maaya built her aggressive baseline game under the guidance of former India No. #1 KG Ramesh and joined Pro Serve Tennis Academy where Manoj Kumar played a crucial role. It was here that her raw talent turned into skill. Her dedication showed early; by age 10, she aimed for a professional tennis career.

Junior circuit success

The junior circuit became Maaya’s proving ground in 2022. However, 2023 marked her first big breakthrough. That year, she won five junior titles: four J60s and one J100. These wins earned her an invite to the prestigious Australian Open 2023 Under-14 showcase. This early taste of the Grand Slam atmosphere was invaluable for her growth.

The transition year

The year 2024 had its challenges and chances. Her junior Grand Slam debut at the Australian Open ended with a first-round loss to Germany’s Sonja Zhenikhova. However, her journey to the Senior National Championships final as an unseeded player caught her attention. She beat seasoned players like Riya Bhatia, showing she could compete well. That year, she also made her senior tennis debut at an ITF W15 tournament in Egypt.

The Nadal connection

Maaya’s most important moment of her young career came from her link to the Rafa Nadal academy in Mallorca; and what started as a week of training in 2024 became a game-changing chance when she impressed them and got a one-year training contract. While there, she saw Rafael Nadal’s training sessions during his farewell Davis Cup Finals. This experience greatly influenced her approach to the game.
