World No. 1 Jannik Sinner‘s absence from the Laver Cup remains one of tennis’s more curious ongoing storylines. The Italian tennis star has never once featured in the Team Europe vs Team World exhibition event since it launched in 2017, and this September’s edition in London will be no different.
Nearly every other top name of Sinner’s generation has featured at the Laver Cup at some point, including rival Carlos Alcaraz. There’s no official explanation from Sinner or his team specifically regarding the Laver Cup.
What’s out there instead is the Italian’s broader stance on exhibition events, which he has spoken about more than once. He’s admitted he prefers to focus on main-level tournaments, which is why he’s been so reluctant to take part in exhibitions throughout his career. Asked to explain his thinking, he put it simply.
“I always consider in what shape I am and what my goals are. I like to be ready for tournaments, so sometimes it’s not the right time or schedule. I’ve never played many exhibitions, and there’s always a reason behind it.”
That philosophy tracks with how his camp has handled other non-mandatory commitments; most notably, his decision to sit out Italy’s Davis Cup defence to protect his pre-season prep drew heavy criticism back home.

However, Sinner has featured in Riyadh’s Six Kings Slam, an exhibition event that is hard to ignore, given its ludicrously high lucrative value.
As for this year’s event, the entry list has been officially announced. Team Europe includes Carlos Alcaraz (depending on his wrist condition), Alexander Zverev, Flavio Cobolli, Jakub Mensik, and the latest addition, Rafa Jódar.
Team World is being led by Taylor Fritz, Alex de Minaur, Ben Shelton, and Tommy Paul. Sinner’s name is once again missing from either roster.
