Carlos Alcaraz lifted the Cincinnati Open 2025 trophy after Jannik Sinner was forced to retire mid-match.
Jannik Sinner’s campaign took an unexpected turn at the Cincinnati Open 2025. Defending champion Sinner retired from his match due to illness. This forced the World No. 1 to withdraw from the US Open 2025 mixed doubles event just before their opening match.
In Cincinnati, Jannik Sinner struggled from the very first point and lost the first five games quickly. After being broken multiple times, he called for a medical timeout. While trying to catch his breath, he told the umpire, “I feel like I can collapse at any moment.”
Soon after, trailing 0-5, he walked to his chair and apologized to the crowd, with tears in his eyes, saying, “I’m sorry, guys, I can’t.”
Carlos Alcaraz, who lifted the American ATP 1000 trophy for the first time in Cincinnati, was visibly disappointed for Sinner. “It’s not the way I wanted to win,” Alcaraz said. “You’ll come back stronger and do what champions do—and you are a champion. I’m sorry.”
The loss was particularly tough for Sinner. He was aiming to extend a 12-match winning streak and an unbeaten run on hard courts. The 24-year-old Italian was also trying to become the first man since Roger Federer (2014 & 2015) to win consecutive Cincinnati titles.

Danielle Collins and Christian Harrison subsequently replaced the Sinner-Siniakova pair. The mixed doubles title was eventually claimed by doubles specialists Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori, who defeated the duo of Iga Swiatek and Casper Ruud in the final.

“The US Open is going to be a tough tournament, but at the same time, I’m looking forward to it if I’m ready, physically and mentally. I will be ready to push, now a couple of days of recovery, and then we’ll get again back to work, and hopefully we’ll be ready. It is for sure the main goal here in the US. For now, recovery is the most important,” he added.
