Will Jannik Sinner participate in quarter-final against Ben Shelton? Everything we know so far

Jannik Sinner had suffered an elbow injury in the fourth round against Grigor Dimitrov.

World No. 1 Jannik Sinner is set to play against World No. 10 Ben Shelton in the quarterfinals of Wimbledon 2025. However, there are doubts over his participation in the match, considering the injury the Italian suffered in the fourth round against Grigor Dimitrov.

In the very first game of the fixture, Jannik Sinner suffered a nasty fall, which severely hurt his elbow. He also had to take a medical timeout in the middle of the clash. The 23-year-old continued to play through pain.

In a heartbreaking sequence of events, his Bulgarian opponent had to hand a walkover despite leading 6-3, 7-5, 2-2 due to a likely pec injury (considering he held the right side of his torso in pain).

While this is nothing short of a jailbreak, there is huge uncertainty over Sinner’s participation in the quarterfinal clash.

Yesterday, he cancelled his practice session, which was set to be held at 4:00 PM local time (8:30 PM IST). The World No. 1 also underwent an MRI test, the results of which are not yet known.

During his post-match press meet, the Italian had said, “I checked the videos a little bit, and [the fall] didn’t seem a tough one, but I still felt it quite a lot, especially [on the] serve and forehand. I could feel it. So, let’s see. Tomorrow we are going to check to see how it is, and then we’ll see.”

In a normal scenario, Sinner would have entered the match as a massive favourite against Shelton, who is playing his maiden quarterfinal at the All England Tennis Club. He didn’t drop a set in their last five meetings, which include the quarterfinal of the Australian Open earlier this year and the fourth round of Wimbledon last year. However, things look different this time.

It is also worth noting that the three-time Grand Slam winner had recently parted ways with his physiotherapist and trainer. Aided by the ATP Tour’s medical staff, he now races against time to become fit for the high-stakes clash, which is scheduled second in the order of play on Court 1 (potential start time is 2:30 PM local time, 7:00 PM IST).
