Iga Swiatek, Stefanos Tsitsipas cruise to easy wins at the 2022 Wimbledon

There were multiple exciting results on another eventful day of the prestigious tournament.

Thursday’s action saw several high-profile tennis stars take to the court at the 2022 Wimbledon Championships. The oldest tournament in the sport is regarded by many as the most prestigious of all the Grand Slams on tour. Iga Swiatek is one of the favourites to win the Women’s Singles bracket and took another step in the right direction. The top seed found it hard to beat her opponent in the second round to advance into the next.  

Iga Swiatek took three sets to beat Lesley Pattinama Kerkhove of the Netherlands by a 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 score. It was a valiant performance by the Dutch player who is ranked 138th in singles in the world. Despite her determination and resilience, Swiatek was too good in the end as she won the contest in two hours and four minutes.

Rafael Nadal was also in action on Thursday. He was up against Ricardas Berankis of Lithuania. The Spaniard won the first two sets easily but had a setback in the third. Then, Nadal raced into a 3-0 lead in the fourth set but at that point, the game was suspended due to rain. The score at the point of interruption read 6-4, 6-4, 4-6, 3-0 in favour of Nadal.

Key Results Elsewhere

Stefanos Tsitsipas, the fourth seed in Men’s Singles found it easy to breeze past his opponent. The Greek tennis star won the contest against Jordan Thompson of Australia by a 6-2, 6-3, 7-5 scoreline. Eleventh seed Taylor Fritz of the United States of America beat United Kingdom’s Alastair Gray by 6-3, 7-6(7-3), 6-3 score. Nick Kyrgios was in sensational form as he cruised past Filip Krajinovic to make it into the third round. The Australian demolished his opponent to win the match by a 6-2, 6-3, 6-1 scoreline.

The fourth seed in Women’s Singles of Wimbledon Paula Badosa eased past her opponent Irina Bara in the second round. She won the match by 6-3, 6-2 which took her only 1 hour and 12 minutes to do so. However, sixth seed Karolina Pliskova was at the receiving end of a shocking defeat. Katie Boulter of the UK beat the Czech Republic international by a 6-3, 6-7(7-4), 6-4 score. 

Doubles Action

Top seeds in Men’s Doubles, Rajeev Ram and Joe Salisbury took no time in defeating their opponents in the first round. The duo won the contest against Daniel Altmaier of Germany and Carlos Taberner of Spain by a 6-3, 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (8-6) score.

Elise Mertens of Belgium and Shuai Zhang of China also recorded a comfortable win. The top seeds in Women’s Doubles won their contest against Anna Bondar and Greet Minnen by a 6-3, 6-1 scoreline.
