Carlos Alcaraz arrives in Wimbledon after a disappointing Queen’s Club campaign.

The events at Wimbledon 2024 will likely be as storied as the prestigious tournament itself. Injuries, medical woes and players sidestepping The Championships itself are all part of the story this season.

Wimbledon, the nearly 150-year-old tennis tournament, is the third stop on the Grand Slam calendar. Martina Navratilova is in the all-time lead with nine titles among the women at SW19. Roger Federer, with eight wins, takes the honours for the men.

Carlos Alcaraz and Marketa Vondrousova are returning as singles defending champions. The 21-year-old Spaniard got the better of Novak Djokovic in an epic five-setter last year, denying the Serb a chance to win his eighth Wimbledon trophy.

A win for the Spaniard will give him back-to-back Grand Slam titles after his French Open triumph and a fourth major. Alcaraz suffered a setback when he could not defend his Queen’s Club crown last week.

Novak Djokovic injured his right knee at Roland Garros, leaving Alcaraz to pick up his maiden Roland Garros title. Fellow Wimbledon champion Andy Murray’s farewell plans are in disarray after retiring with an injury at Queen’s last week. Rafael Nadal is sitting out the tournament and will be focusing on the Olympics instead.

Another men’s contender is Jannik Sinner, who wears the World No. #1 crown well. The Italian picked up his first title as No. #1 at Halle Open last week and is well-placed to slug it out for the Wimbledon title.

On the women’s side, Iga Swiatek took a break after winning the French Open for a third straight time. Swiatek’s decision proved wise as her rivals for the SW19 trophy all made earlier than expected exits at the warm-up events.

Marketa Vondrousova (right hip injury), Ons Jabeur (illness), Aryna Sabalenka (shoulder injury) and Elena Rybakina (abdominal pain) all had to cut short their stay in Berlin. Another title hopeful, Coco Gauff, made an exit in the last four in Germany.

Not to be forgotten is Jessica Pegula, a dark horse who won the Berlin Open to take her first win of the season. Pegula made the quarterfinals at Wimbledon last year before losing to eventual champion Vondrousova.

Other players to watch out for would be Aryna Sabalenka, Coco Gauff, two-time finalist Ons Jabeur, Jasmine Paolini and Zheng Qinwen among the women. Moving to the men’s side of the draw, a fit Djokovic, Jannik Sinner, Alcaraz, and Alex de Minaur are all capable of stirring the pot. Daniil Medvedev is the dark horse among the men.

Coming to the local talent, players to keep an eye out for are Emma Raducanu, Katie Boulter, Jack Draper and Cameron Norrie. Andy Murray could be a latecomer to the party if he can recuperate in time.
