Rohan Bopanna and Matt Ebden are seeded second at Wimbledon 2024.

Rohan Bopanna, at 43 years when playing the Australian Open in January, broke new ground in the year’s first Grand Slam. He became the oldest World No. #1 in ATP history. He also picked up the label of the oldest man to win a Grand Slam when he won the doubles trophy in Melbourne along with Matthew Ebden.

Bopanna and Ebden, second seeds at Wimbledon 2024 Championships, will face unseeded Frenchmen Adrian Mannarino and Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard in the men’s doubles opening round.

Rohan Bopanna will turn up for his 14th Wimbledon main draw and has played three semifinals at the venue over the years. In 2013, it was with Edouard Roger-Vasselin, with Florin Mergea in 2015, and finally, in 2023, with his current doubles partner Matthew Ebden. Victory in doubles at SW19 came to Ebden in 2022 in a team-up with fellow Aussie Max Purcell.

Rohan Bopanna/Matthew Ebden vs Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard/Adrian Mannarino preview

The Indo-Australian duo of Rohan Bopanna and Matthew Ebden reached their Grand Slam final in Melbourne this season since teaming up in 2023. They will be keen to improve their showing over last year’s Wimbledon when they made the last four.

Playing at Queen’s Club in London a week before Wimbledon, the second seeds dropped out in the last eight to the US-Russian pair of Taylor Fritz and Karen Khachanov. Ebden did also sign up to play at Eastbourne with John Peers for company and reached the title round of the SW19 warm-up event.

A rematch in the semifinals with Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori looks to be likely. The Italian pair of Bolelli and Vavassori got the better of Bopanna and Ebden in the semifinals at Roland Garros. Bopanna and Ebden are seeded to meet the seventh seed pairing of Wesley Koolhof and Nikola Mektic or top seeds Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos in the title round.

Prediction

Rohan Bopanna and Matthew Ebden could not have asked for a better start to their Wimbledon doubles campaign. They will be squaring off against unseeded French duo of Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard and Adrian Mannarino in the first round. Bopanna and Ebden have won three from five matches this season and are 4-1 at Wimbledon.

Perricard, the younger of the two, and veteran Adrian Mannarino are playing doubles together for the first time. The 20-year-old Perricard has signed up to play doubles at Wimbledon for the first time, while Mannarino played his first doubles main draw at SW19 back in 2015. Adrian Mannarino is yet to get past the second round on the iconic grass courts.

Traditionally being singles players — Perricard and Mannarino have enjoyed relatively significant success in the singles draw of tournaments.

Perricard bagged the ARP 250 title in Lyon in the third week of May, besides reaching the second round at the Cinch Championships in June. Perricard’s journey in the singles draw ended in the final qualifying round against fellow Frenchman Maxime Janvier.

However, the 20-year-old is back in the fray as a lucky loser after Alejandro Davidovich Fokina pulled out. Mannarino is 15-12 when playing singles at Wimbledon and has reached the round of 16 three times, most recently being in 2018.

The number two seeds, both ATP veterans, should have no trouble getting past the inexperienced French duo.

Result: Rohan Bopanna/Matthew Ebden to win in straight sets.
