Sumit Nagal becomes first Indian in five years to qualify for main draw of Wimbledon

Sumit Nagal will also make his French Open main draw debut later this week.
Sumit Nagal has become the first Indian since 2019 to qualify for the main draw of the Wimbledon Championships.
Nagal has been enjoying a breakthrough year in 2024. At the 2024 Australian Open, he recorded three straight-set wins to secure a spot in the main draw. Moreover, he took down then World No. #37 Alexander Bublik to reach the second round of the Grand Slam.

He later won the ATP Chennai Challenger title by defeating top seed Luca Nardi in the final. At the Dubai Tennis Championships, he won a set against Lorenzo Sonego while he lost to Milos Raonic in the first round of Indian Wells.
As a result of his improved performance, Sumit Nagal reached his career-best ranking of #80 in March. The Indian tennis star stunned Matteo Arnaldi in the first round of the Monte Carlo Masters, while he gave former World No. #7 Holger Rune tough competition in the second round.
At the recent ATP 250 Geneva Open, he suffered a first-round exit against Argentina’s Sebastian Baez after a gritty attempt. Sumit Nagal will be making his French Open main draw debut later this week. He also took to X (formerly Twitter) to share a post. He wrote, “Hello Paris”.

He has also secured a spot in the main draw of the upcoming Wimbledon Championships. The third Grand Slam of the year is scheduled to take place between July 1 and 14. Sumit Nagal would also look forward to representing the nation at the upcoming 2024 Paris Olympics.
However, the qualified players for the sporting mega fest will be announced after the 2024 French Open. Rohan Bopanna is set to participate in the Olympics. However, he’ll choose either Yuki Bhambri or N. Sriram Balaji as his partner in the 2024 Paris Games.
