Wimbledon 2024 is Nagal’s second direct main draw appearance in Grand Slams.

Sumit Nagal, India’s No. 1 singles player, will be making his Wimbledon main draw debut on Monday. Nagal had secured direct entry into Roland Garros, giving the qualifying rounds a miss in the clay court major held in May. He has signed up for the men’s singles and doubles events, partnering with Serbia’s Dusan Lajovic for the doubles draw.

Nagal will be up against another Serbian, Miomir Kecmanovic, in the first round. The opening round on Monday is the beginning of a long road for the 72nd-ranked Indian. Kecmanovic, the World No. 53, will not be an easy hurdle to cross. Should Nagal find a way past the Serbian, another stern test awaits in the form of Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor. Nagal also finds himself in the same section of the draw as top seed Jannik Sinner

It has been six years since Sumit Nagal last walked out onto the grass courts of SW19, losing in the first round of qualifiers to Poland’s Kamil Majchrzak in 2018.

Sumit Nagal began his year with a bang, getting past 27th-ranked Alexander Bublik in Melbourne in the first round, notching up an opening-round win against Matteo Arnaldi in Monte Carlo. Nagal went to take a set off Holger Rune in the second round against the World No. #7.

The Indian player has made three Challenger finals this season, winning at Chennai and Heilbronn. Prior to arriving in London, he made the third final in Perugia, Italy, where he lost to Luciano Darderi.

Miomir Kecmanovic has enjoyed a good run this season, bettering the likes of Jan-Lennard Struff and Tommy Paul at the Australian Open in back-to-back five-setters. He went to defeat Casper Ruud in Rome a week after losing to the Norwegian in Madrid.

Kecmanovic is fresh off a last-eight appearance at the Rothesay International. Playing in his second straight quarterfinal in Eastbourne, he lost to eventual finalist Max Purcell.

Prediction

Along with a head-to-head lead of one-nil against Sumit Nagal, the 53rd-ranked Miomir Kecmanovic has won two out of his five previous matches. In contrast, Nagal has one win from five previous matches played on the ATP level. Kecmanovic also stretched the ‘s-Hertogenbosch semifinalist Tallon Griekspoor to three tiebreak sets before bowing out in the first round.

Kecmanovic has an edge over Nagal with a 13-17 win-loss record halfway through the 2024 season, while the latter is on 3-7. The Indian has slipped one spot in the ATP Rankings from his career-high of No. 71 despite making the finals at Perugia, an event on the Challenger circuit.

The Serbian has a career win-loss of 11 – 15, while Nagal is yet to play in the main draw of a grass-court event. At Wimbledon, Kecmanovic has won four of the eight he has played at the venue. Reaching the third round in 2022 has been his best result.

Kecmanovic’s experience against top ten players on the tour and a better record than his Indian rival at Wimbledon will work in his favour.

Result: Miomir Kecmanovic to win in four sets.
