Wimbledon 2025 opened with a historic shake-up, as a frenzy of upsets saw nearly two dozen seeded players crash out in the first round.
From pre-Wimbledon grass event winners to Grand Slam champions, nobody was spared as Wimbledon 2025 recorded the joint highest number of upsets in Grand Slam history. It all started with World No. 9 and two-time semi-finalist Daniil Medvedev being knocked out rather comfortably in the end, by Benjamin Bonzi in four sets.
Eighth ranked Holger Rune seemed in a dominating position at two sets up, but in a miraculous comeback, Nicholas Jarry, stunned the Danish to prevail in five. Jelena Ostapenko, the hard-hitter was knocked out as well, by local hope Sonay Kartal.
The Brits had a superb day, with Katie Boulter too triumphing over Paula Badosa, who is ranked nine in the world. Like her girlfriend, Stefanos Tsitsipas too faltered, losing the first two sets, and eventually handing voer a walkover to Valentin Royer.
The first day finally ended with several shocks, and World No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz surviving in a five-set duel. However, the second day showed some more spectacular results. Both World No. 3’s were eliminated, with Jessica Pegula displaying some average tennis, taken full toll of, by 163 Elisabetta Cocciaretto.
Alexander Zverev, who resumed play after finishing 1-1 on day 1, somehow forced a decider set, but #72 Arthur Rinderknech held his nerve to emerge victorious. 2024 semi-finalist and an otherwise consistent customer, Lorenzo Musetti was stunned by 126 Nikoloz Basilashvili in four sets.

Just when everyone felt the surprises had come to an end, arguably the biggest of all was landed by 42nd ranked Dayana Yastremska, who defeated 2025 French Open and second seed Coco Gauff, in straight sets. At the same time, the evergreen veteran Gael Monfils defeated fellow Frenchman and 18th seed Ugo Humbert.
