Carlos Alcaraz was unbeaten in the grass season last year.

Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz is one of the favourites to win the Wimbledon 2024 championships. Last year, he ended Novak Djokovic’s 34-match unbeaten streak at the Centre Court to win his maiden grass-court Grand Slam.

Earlier this month, Alcaraz became the youngest male player to complete a surface slam by defeating Alexander Zverev in the final of the 2024 French Open. Nevertheless, his unbeaten streak was halted by Great Britain’s Jack Draper in the second round of the 2024 Queen’s Club Championships.

The loss also forced the Spaniard to drop to the third spot in the ATP rankings, as he was the defending champion at the Queen’s Club Championships. Last season, he stood unbeaten throughout the grass season, nevertheless, he has greater challenges to face in 2024.

With that being said, let’s take a look at Carlos Alcaraz’s projected path to the Wimbledon 2024 final:

First Round: Mark Lajal

The defending champion will commence his Wimbledon 2024 campaign against Estonia’s Mark Lajal. The Estonian tennis star has made his way into the main draw by recording wins over the likes of Francesco Passaro, Henrique Rocha and James Duckworth in the qualifiers. However, with limited experience and an unfamiliar surface, the ATP World No. 262 is most likely to suffer a first-round exit.

Second Round: Sebastian Ofner

Sebastian Ofner is currently in the semifinals of the ATP 250 Mallorca Championships, where he will face Great Britain’s Paul Jubb. Ofner is one of the most exciting players on the tour, thanks to his tall stature and quick serves. However, the Austrian would arrive in London with a negative win-loss record in 2024 and with that, he’ll face troubles against the defending champion.

Third Round: Matteo Arnaldi or Frances Tiafoe

Well known for his ‘fairy tale’ campaign at the 2022 US Open, Frances Tiafoe hadn’t found success in the grass court Major. He reached the fourth round in 2022, where he defeated Alexander Bublik and Dusan Lajovic.

However, he was defeated by Grigor Dimitrov in the third round last season. Meanwhile, Matteo Arnaldi has also struggled with his form. Moreover, it will be a huge challenge for Arnaldi to perform consistently on grass.

Fourth Round: Sebastián Baez or Ugo Humbert

Sebastián Baez has shown decent intent this season as he has won two titles in 2024 with a win-loss record of 23-14. However, his current form is concerning. Baez will commence his Wimbledon 2024 campaign against the United States’ Brandon Nakashima, who’s also a top candidate for the fourth round if he wins the first match.

Ugo Humbert was eliminated in the first round of the 2024 French Open by Lorenzo Sonego. In the grass season, he reached the semifinals of the Libema Open. Apart from that, he has been eliminated in the first round of the Queen’s Club Championships and the Mallorca Championships. Thus, Humbert is not in his best form right now.

Quarterfinals: Tommy Paul

After Carlos Alcaraz was eliminated in the second round of the Queen’s Club Championships, Tommy Paul went on to win the ATP 500 grass court event. Paul defeated the likes of Alejandro Tabilo, Lorenzo Musetti, Sebastian Korda and Jack Draper on his way to the final. Thus, the American will aim to reach his maiden Wimbledon semifinals, where he will be up against Carlos Alcaraz.

Semifinals: Jannik Sinner

Carlos Alcaraz can face his arch-rival Jannik Sinner in the semifinals for the third time in 2024. The two faced each other in the semifinals of the Indian Wells Masters, where Alcaraz walked out victorious.

Later, they again locked horns against each other in the semifinals of the 2024 French Open, where they played a five-set marathon. However, the match also went in the Spaniard’s favor. Sinner might be seeking redemption as Carlos Alcaraz will exhibit his best game to defend his title.

Final: Novak Djokovic or Hubert Hurkacz

Novak Djokovic is returning from a surgery, which was required following his injury at the 2024 French Open during his clash against Argentina’s Francisco Cerundolo. The seven-time champion has got a relatively easy draw and he’s one of the favourites to reach the final of the Wimbledon 2024 Championships. If he manages to reach the final, he will play a replay of last year’s final against Carlos Alcaraz.

Hubert Hurkacz enjoyed a memorable camp in 2021, where he defeated Roger Federer, Daniil Medvedev, and Alexander Bublik to reach the semifinals of the Wimbledon Championships. However, he fell short against Italy’s Matteo Berrettini. However, the Polish tennis star, who ended up as the runner-up in Halle last week, would be eying his first Grand Slam final.
