Jasmine Paolini will look to become the first Italian to defend her title.

The 25th edition of the WTA 1000 Dubai Open is guaranteed to be a star-studded affair. The top 10 women of the WTA Tour will take centre stage at the Dubai Tennis Championships 2025. The UAE-based event is the last event of the Middle East swing.

The recently concluded Doha Open had more than a few upsets. World No. #1 and 2020 champion Aryna Sabalenka lost in the second round. Iga Swiatek followed in the semi-finals with a fifth straight loss to Jelena Ostapenko, losing out on her fourth-straight title in Doha.

The race for the WTA No. #1 position continues after unexpected results in Doha. Sabalenka and Swiatek are to resume their battle for the No. #1 spot in the UAE. Swiatek will be defending 650 points heading Dubai as she was the semi-finalist last season. Sabalenka will be dropping fewer points as she made a second-round exit in 2024.

The surprise package was Jasmine Paolini, who not only lifted her maiden WTA 1000 trophy at the Dubai Tennis Championships—she did so by dropping a set only twice. Victory over Anna Kalinskaya gave Paolini her first title since 2021. The Italian will be joined by former champions Sara Errani (2016), Elina Svitolina (2017-18), Belinda Bencic (2019) and Jelena Ostapenko (2022).

Barbora Krejckova, the 2023 champion and newly minted 2024 Australian Open champion Madison Keys, will be missing in action. Danielle Collins will be another noteworthy absence in Dubai. Emma Raducanu has been given a wildcard for the hard-court tournament, even as British No. #1 Katie Boulter’s name is missing from the women’s draw. Raducanu is poised to make her first appearance at the Dubai Tennis Championships as a wildcard.

In the draw’s bottom half, Swiatek is seeded to face Qinwen Zheng in the last eight and her nemesis, Jelena Ostapenko in the last four. Meanwhile, Sabalenka could run into Jessica Pegula in the last eight and Coco Gauff in the last four. The two top seeds have both received tricky draws once again on the back of a disappointing campaign in Doha.
